According to director Joe Cornish, Attack the Block 2 is still in development, with star John Boyega having discussed ideas with him recently. Released in 2011, Attack the Block was one of the year's surprises (and ranked in Screen Rant's top 10), turning the alien invasion thriller on its head by pitting the otherworldly nasties against a group of tough kids from South London. The movie is also notable for introducing John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker to a broader audience.

Boyega appeared as Finn in the Star Wars sequels partly due to J.J. Abrams seeing him in Attack the Block. Whittaker went on to make history by becoming the thirteenth and first female incarnation of The Doctor on Doctor Who. Cornish, who got help funding Attack The Block from long-time friend Edgar Wright, has since gone on to direct just one movie, 2019's The Kid Who Would Be King, which sadly flopped at the box office despite reasonably good reviews. But many fans are holding out hope of a sequel to Attack the Block, which would reunite Cornish with his stars.

Speaking to EW, Cornish says that Attack the Block 2 is still very much in development. The writer-director says that he even got together with Boyega to discuss the sequel's story while staying socially distanced in his garden. He adds the conversation went so well they ended up sitting in the dark, unable to see each other. Cornish ends by confirming he's currently working on the project, so it's very much his current focus. You can read his full comments below:

We're working on it at the moment. John Boyega was round at my place a few weeks ago and we sat in the garden — socially distanced — talking about story ideas until it was so dark we couldn't see each other. So, yeah, we're working on that.

The fact that Cornish confirms he's currently working on a sequel is exciting for long-time fans. It is an excellent sign that Attack the Block 2 is moving forward since the last update director provided noted that discussions had only just begun with Boyega. There was no confirmation that the project was actively in development, so Cornish's news is promising. Hopefully, the script is good enough to get funding, as it should be a simple sell with Boyega and potentially Whittaker attached.

Whether Cornish can recapture the unique combination of humor, action, and social commentary in his sequel remains to be seen. Still, there's no doubt Attack the Block 2 would be able to attract an audience. The other question that needs to be answered is just when the movie would be shot. Boyega's schedule is packed full of movie roles, and even if Whittaker does leave Dr. Who after season 13, her schedule would also have to be taken into account. But there's no doubt the will is there, and the news is positive, no matter how long the sequel takes to get before cameras.
