A new teaser trailer for Atlanta season 3 appears to show the end of the world. Created by Donald Glover and debuting on FX in 2016, Atlanta began its run by introducing viewers to Earnest “Earn” Marks (Glover) and his cousin Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), better known as the rapper Paper Boi. The duo attempts to find success in the rap world, while often getting into memorable and occasionally surreal situations. The series also stars Zazie Beetz and Lakeith Stanfield, who play Vanessa and Darius respectively.
Atlanta season 2 concluded back in May 2018, gaining critical acclaim and plenty of awards recognition. Season 3 was quickly announced, with an Atlanta season 4 renewal following shortly after. Though the plan was for both seasons to start filming in early 2020, eyeing a January 2021 release date, production was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, back in April, Glover posted a photo to social media to announce that production was underway. More recently, Henry revealed that filming on Atlanta season 3 had wrapped. And now, fans are getting their first glimpse of what to expect when the show returns.
To celebrate Halloween, Glover shared a fitfully unsettling teaser trailer for Atlanta season 3 on Twitter. To make matters even more creepy, the star and creator uploaded the video to Gilga.com — a website that’s only active during night hours. In the teaser, a woman is heard asking: “It’s after the end of the world, don’t you know that yet?” She repeats the question over and over with increasing urgency, and it soon becomes a chorus, as the camera shows several utterly empty locations (venues, streets, hotel rooms and more), before settling on a close-up of Alfred’s face. The rapper is sitting at a table, ostensibly served by two waiters, who are facing the wall. As the teaser concludes, a close-up shot of his face reveals Alfred looking quite afraid.
It’s unclear whether the scary Atlanta season 3 trailer reveals anything specific about the plot of the series when it returns. It’s possible that the eerie vibes of the teaser were created specifically for Halloween. In any case, when fans last saw Earn and Alfred, the duo seem to come to an understanding, as they are about to embark on a European tour. The third installment of the highly-praised, Emmy-winning series will likely pick up from that point. Reports noted that filming for Atlanta season 3 took place in London before continuing on in Amsterdam and Paris. While a specific premiere date has yet to be announced, the premiere of the first footage suggests more announcements will soon follow.
