Atlanta Season 2 drops a new teaser that puts star Donald Glover's life on heavy rotation. Season 1 of the acclaimed FX series earned Glover Emmy awards for Outstanding Lead Actor (Comedy) and Outstanding Directing (Comedy). Atlanta also picked up an Outstanding Achievement in Comedy award from the Television Critics Association. The WGA named it Best Comedy Series and Best New Series.
Debuting in 2016, Atlanta follows the exploits of Earn Marks (Glover), a struggling Princeton drop-out trying to make a career managing his cousin, an aspiring rapper named Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry). With Paper Boi's right-hand man Darius (Lakieth Stanfield) in tow, the pair navigates the world of celebrity and the world of the streets. Meanwhile, Earn also manages his relationship with Van (Zazie Beets), his sometimes-girlfriend and mother of his daughter. Atlanta blends thoughtful observational humor with surrealism to create a wholly unique series.
AtlantaFX has debuted a cryptic new teaser for Atlanta ahead of the premiere of Season 2. The striking clip features an impassive Glover literally rotating through his life. With the camera fixed to him, Glover topples to the side but each time he hits the ground, he emerges on the other side only to topple again. Yellow Days' soulful song "Gap in the Clouds" provides the clip's soundtrack. Is poor Earn Marks doomed to keep on crashing forever? Watch the clip above and try to figure out how they managed to create it.
Details about Atlanta Season 2 are mostly under wraps. We do know the season carries the subtitle "Robbin' Season," a reference to the retail theft that becomes epidemic in Atlanta ahead of the Christmas holiday. Atlanta uniquely straddles the line between celebrity culture and street culture, depicting a strange limbo between wealth and poverty. The show's surrealist approach emphasizes this sense of people existing in a kind of unreal in-between world.
Fans of Atlanta have waited two years for Donald Glover and the gang to return, so anticipation runs high. Glover himself has been very busy since Atlanta last aired. Of course much of his time was taken up playing the role of Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Glover also made time to play Aaron Davis aka Prowler in last summer's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Glover will next voice Simba in Disney's live-action The Lion King. With everything the actor/director/writer has going on, who knows how many more seasons of Atlanta we will even get.
Atlanta returns to FX on March 1st, 2018.
