One of the senior writers for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla shared his thoughts about where the next installment in the series could be set and Brazil was a location of major interest. The most recent Assassin's Creed title had players take part in the Viking invasion of England during the ninth century, a setting that would be in stark contrast to the tropical climates of South America.

The setting for the next Assassin's Creed title is one of the aspects of the series that receives the most speculation, as it often has a major impact on every element of game design. Developer Ubisoft takes great care to implement as much historical accuracy as possible into this series, going so far as to limit certain gameplay mechanics and abilities to titles where they make sense. After the release of the 2016 Assassin's Creed film, Ubisoft changed tactics when it came to the time periods depicted in the series. Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla were all set prior to the first Assassin's Creed game, something that had not been done up until that point. It is not yet known if Ubisoft will continue that trend with the next installment, but the speculation has already begun regardless.

Assassin's Creed: Valhalla senior writer Alain Merceica added to the speculation in a recent interview with The Gamer. While not specifically confirming anything, Mercieca shared his thoughts on some locales he believes could make for exciting Assassin's Creed games, and the one that seems most intriguing to him is Brazil. He explained that the rich culture of South America would be great to depict on a grand scale, citing the Incas and the Spanish Conquistadors in particular. Mercieca also shared his interest in using Malta as a potential setting as well.

On a grander scale I do feel there is a rich tapestry of culture in South America that the brand has yet to explore fully. From the Incas to the Spanish Conquistadors, it is a very fascinating time. Though Black Flag did touch on some of it, I’m feeling more the Brazil region.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla And Black Flag Head Writer Leaves Ubisoft

While Brazil itself has yet to be realized in the franchise, Mercieca did acknowledge that Assassin's Creed: Black Flag explored an incredibly small portion of that part of the world. This could indicate that a game set in Brazil could be heavily influenced by the pirate-centric title, but that is only if Ubisoft chooses to go in that direction. It may seem like a smart move given Black Flag's popularity in the Assassin's Creed community.

Even though it may be exciting to hear one of the series' writers discussing their ideas for a setting, one must take a step back and recognize that nothing Mercieca said should be taken as the definite future of the franchise. In some ways he seems to be speculating the same way gamers themselves do, which makes it seem like even he is not sure what is next. No matter what Ubisoft decides, however, it seems certain that Mercieca and the other writers will do their best to make the next game live up to the standards of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and other recent installments.
