Ubisoft is adding a new free update to Assassin's Creed Valhalla that will be challenging players to prove their Viking skills. Mastery Challenge will add five shrines to the map, each with three themed challenges that focus on different areas of combat.

Mastery Challenge is the latest free update to come to Assassin's Creed Valhallaand more free updates are still to come. That includes the release of the long promised Discovery Tour mode for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, a free update that lets player's turn off combat and explore the historical side of the game. If Ubisoft follows the same path it did for the last Discovery Tours it crafted, it will also offer Discovery Tour as a standalone game that will give players the maps and the history tour, and remove the combat, story quests, and other main game mechanics.

Ubisoft has announced that Mastery Challenge will add five new shrines to the map of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Each shrine will have three themed trials: Trial of the Bear, Trial of the Wolf, and Trial of the Raven. Each trial awards points based on player performing certain moves or kinds of kills. Trial of the Bear focuses on melee combat. Trial of the Wolf is about ranged attacks, awarding points for headshots and weak point hits, as well as ranged kills. Lastly, Trial of the Raven focuses on stealth, forcing players to remain anonymous as they assassinate targets or steal treasure. To make sure that the playing field is level, players will be given pre-established Assassin's Creed Valhalla ability load outs and gear sets for each challenge.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: How to Unlock Mastery Challenge Exclusive Gear

AC Valhalla adds Mastery Challenges for free

After completing the objective in each trial, players will be given a score and awarded a medal based on how they accomplished the specific goals of the trial. Players who achieve silver or gold medals in a trial will receive a new currency called energies, which can be turned in at a special vendor to unlock Assassin's Creed Valhalla weapons, decorations, and tattoos that are exclusive to players of Mastery Challenge. As players progress, they will also be uncovering a "mythical mystery" and eventually reveal a special treasure.

Mastery Challenge looks like a great addition for those who like to focus on the combat of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Its high power level requirement of 221 indicates it is clearly meant for veteran players who have spent dozens of hours in the game and are now looking for a new way to play. It should hopefully tide players over until the next story DLC for Assassin's Creed Valhalla releases later this year.
