Assassin’s Creed Origins Trailer: Meet The Order of the Ancients

Ubisoft has released a new trailer for Assassin's Creed: Origins, the tenth major installment in the popular video game franchise. The trailer previews the villains of the game, a nefarious group called the Order of the Ancients, who seem to be just as sinister as the Templars who appeared in previous Assassins Creed games.

The 2007 action adventure stealth game Assassin's Creed set during the Crusades marked the beginning of an extremely successful franchise. Subsequent installments took the player to various times and places, including the Revolutionary War, the Golden Age of Piracy, the Seven Years' War and the Victorian era. The basic formula for the Assassin's Creed games was to release one game each year, but a desire for better quality as well as disappointing game sales for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, caused Ubisoft to delay their next release until 2017.

Officially announced in June after three years of development, Assassin's Creed: Origins will send players to a rich, open-world environment in Ancient Egypt with a new protagonist, Bayek, who is accompanied by an eagle that can be controlled by the player, as seen in the E3 gameplay trailer. The latest trailer highlights more gameplay potential but also puts an emphasis on the game's story.

While showcasing cinematically stunning graphics, the trailer introduces the Order of the Ancients, a group much like the Templars who have manipulated historical events from the shadows, and are secretly controlling the pharaoh. The Order are described as being "mysterious figures who seek the power of the ancient gods [whose] grasp for might and control is limitless." The latest Assassin's Creed: Origins trailer portrays the Order as being a nearly-unbeatable force. It appears that the Order of the Ancients is an early incarnation of Brotherhood of the Assassins' main rival, the Templars, in the larger mythology of the franchise.

The new Origins trailer also offers a sneak peak at the game's naval combat - one of the biggest selling points and gameplay features of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Though the trailer is full of highlights, its most epic moment comes at the end, with Bayek taking aim at a charging elephant.
