For years, fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy have been clamoring for the return of the sarcastic, chainsaw-handed Ash, as played by Bruce Campbell. Instead, Raimi and Campbell teamed up to produce a remake of the first movie - and while the 2013 Evil Dead was well-received (read our review), plans for a followup (and the possibility of a proper Evil Dead 4) appear to have stalled.
As such, fans understandably rejoiced when Starz announced that it will air a series titled Ash vs. Evil Dead - starring Campbell back in his most famous role. Since then, details have trickled out about the show's approach and where it will pick up the story of its "groovy" title character. Now the marketing machine has officially kicked into gear.
Starz has released its first teaser for Ash vs. Evil Dead, which you can see above. While there's no actual footage just yet (the show is still in production, after all), it does exactly what it's supposed to do: increase public awareness of the project and ramp up fan excitement for the project. In addition, the network released the below poster for the show.

The imagery central to both the teaser and the accompanying poster, of course, harkens back to the series' roots and that creepy cabin where Ash first encountered the "deadites." At this point, there's no reason to think that the new show will share a similar setting, but the fact that Starz is taking full advantage of the 30+ year history of the franchise is certainly a smart business decision.
All three original films have amassed an impressive cult following and become classics in their own right - and to that end, Ash vs. Evil Dead has massive shoes to fill. The casting of actors like Lucy Lawless (another Raimi alum and a similarly iconic figure as Campbell) bodes well for the show's success. Furthermore, if this initial marketing is truly an indication of just how true the show aims to be to the spirit of the films, fans should be in for a treat when the series does finally arrive on Starz.
Here is the official synopsis and cast breakdown for Ash vs. Evil Dead:
Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.
The cast is led by Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) in the role of Ash Williams, Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks, Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner, Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick and Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past.
Ash vs. Evil Dead will premiere on Starz later this year.
