A set photo for the 2018 Arrowverse crossover, titled "Elseworlds" and featuring Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl, reveals Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) will wear his black suit from the DC Comics. The CW has made an annual occurrence out of crossover over its DC Comics television shows, with the events getting bigger and bigger as the years go by - and as the network adds more series to its lineup. After two years of The CW's four main DC Comics shows crossing over for massive events - "Invasion!" in 2016 and "Crisis on Earth-X" in 2017 - this year is expected to be a slightly smaller event.

While Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl will be featured in The CW's 2018 Arrowverse crossover, titled "Elseworlds," Legends of Tomorrow will be sitting out this year. (Fellow DC series Black Lightning has yet to be part of any crossovers and will remain separate this year.) However, to make up for the lack of the Legends team, "Elseworlds" will feature the return of Hoechlin's Superman as well as the introductions of Ruby Rose's Batwoman and Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois Lane. Now, we get a look at Hoechlin back in costume as the Man of Steel - but he's wearing a decidedly different costume.

A set photo for "Elseworlds" posted to Twitter by Stephen Amell reveals Hoechlin will be donning Superman's black suit from the comics. See Hoechlin alongside Arrow's Amell and The Flash's Grant Gustin in the photo below.

There was a great deal of discussion leading up to and following the release of Warner Bros' Justice League movie that Henry Cavill could potentially don the black suit from the comics. While that didn't turn out to be the case, there was a deleted scene from the movie in which the black costume appears in the background. Now, however, it seems the DCTV universe will bring this particular suit design to live-action through their upcoming crossover event.

As of yet, it's unclear why Hoechlin's Superman will wear the black costume, since there have been very little concrete details about "Elseworlds" revealed. In the comics, Superman dons the suit after being resurrected during the 1993 comic book event "The Death of Superman," but it's unclear if The CW will adapt this storyline in any way. Plus, given The CW's Arrowverse is confirmed to exist in a multiverse, it's not even certain whether it will be Supergirl's version of the Man of Steel wearing the black costume, or an alternate universe iteration of Superman in the suit.

Certainly, it will be interesting to see the Arrowverse's justification for bringing the costume to live-action. But as of yet, all we know for sure is it will no doubt make for some striking visuals once the crossover premieres. For now, fans will have to make due with simply knowing the black suit will appear in the "Elseworlds" crossover and theorize what it means for Earth-38's Man of Steel.
