With everything that's happened in just a few short months, the CW's Arrowverse will look very different in 2021. At this point, all Arrowverse shows have wrapped up their 2019-2020 seasons, and are currently on hiatus. Normally, most would be back on the air in the fall, with new seasons premiering in September. However, due to production delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, all Arrowverse shows will remain on break until 2021.

To say 2019-2020 was an eventful year for the Arrowverse would be putting it mildly. The biggest story of the season was of course "Crisis on Infinite Earths," the five-part crossover event that encompassed all Arrowverse shows, included a shocking DCEU cameo, and incorporated characters from past DC TV shows and movies. Most importantly, it rebooted the multiverse, made changes to Arrowverse canon, and put all the heroes on the same Earth, meaning Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) doesn't have to cross universes to team-up with Barry Allen (Grant Gustin).

The effects of "Crisis on Infinite Earths" have already been deeply felt in the Arrowverse, as all the current shows have had to spend at least half a season in post-Crisis mode. By now, the characters have adjusted to the way things are. But, "Crisis" isn't the only thing that's brought change to the Arrowverse. There were also a few unplanned and unexpected decisions made as well. Major characters exiting the Arrowverse, game-changing twists, and brand new shows will make the Arrowverse look drastically different when it starts up again. Here's every way the Arrowverse will be different in 2021.

Arrowverse Lost Arrow And Gained Superman & Lois

Arrow season 8 aired three episodes in 2020 before coming to an end. So for the first time ever, the CW's Arrowverse schedule will be without its original show. Arrow being over is a big loss, but it will be replaced. The Arrowverse will still have at least five shows, as it will be gaining Superman & Lois, which has already been ordered to series. Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin as Earth-Prime's Clark Kent and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. The upcoming series will focus on Lois and Clark as they raise their teenage sons. The CW could gain an additional spinoff series in the form of Green Arrow and the Canaries, but it hasn't been officially picked up yet. Even if it does, it may not get off the ground until the 2021-2022 season.

Arrowverse Episode Counts and Season Schedules

Supergirl Season 5

Having all their seasons moved to 2021 will obviously have an impact on episode counts and scheduling. Due to coronavirus, this situation is expected and unavoidable. CW president Mark Pedowitz said some shows may be limited to 13 episodes, while others will still have full seasons (despite not being on the air at all during the fall). That means the shows with full 22-episode seasons are unlikely to have any breaks, and could get two-hour season finales. The CW hasn't revealed which shows will receive 13-episode seasons, or if any of them will be in the Arrowverse.

Arrowverse Will Have A New Batwoman

Batwoman

Easily the biggest surprise from the Arrowverse since Ezra Miller appeared as the Flash in "Crisis" was the news that Batwoman star Ruby Rose has suddenly exited the series, effective immediately. Rose won't be back to play the titular heroine. Instead of recasting Kate Kane with a new actress, the series will write the character out altogether and bring in a new hero to carry the "Batwoman" mantle. So with a new lead character, Batwoman will almost feel like a new show when it enters its second season.

Arrowverse Will Have A Much Smaller Crossover

Viewers have grown accustomed to big annual crossovers, but the 2021 season will be a massive departure from that trend. Not every event has made use of all the shows, but they have included most of them. Even so, an exception will be made for the next event, as it will only be a two-part crossover between Batwoman and Superman & Lois. The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl won't be getting their own episodes in the event, but characters from their shows will appear. No specific heroes have been confirmed as of yet. Arrowverse crossovers usually happen in the beginning of December, but that won't be happening this time since the seasons are expected to run between January and May.

The Flash Lost The Elongated Man

The Arrowverse lost another key hero when it was reported that Elongated Man actor Hartley Sawyer was fired from The Flash over old tweets that were regarded as racist and misogynistic. Sawyer's Ralph Dibney has been a member of Team Flash since season 4, and with everything that The Flash was doing with Dibney and his love interest from the comics, Sue Dearbon (Natalie Dreyfuss), it's clear the series had big plans for the character in season 7. Considering the amount of screen time The Flash devoted to Ralph Dibney over the last three seasons, his sudden absence will leave a big hole.

Legends of Tomorrow & The Flash Will Have New Teams

The Flash was already getting a new team, even if Elongated Man didn't leave the show. With Ralph gone for good, The Flash will be out one superhero, plus Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) has taken a temporary leave of absence. Allegra could officially join Team Flash since the actress playing her, Kayla Compton, has been promoted to series regular. Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight) was added in season 6, but he isn't currently an active member. That will change in season 7, as McKnight too has been upped to series regular. Sue Dearbon being framed for murder could keep her around as well (if she isn't written off the show with Ralph Dibney).

The Waverider lost one of its original crew members when Ray Palmer aka The Atom (Brandon Routh) exited Legends of Tomorrow, along with his wife, Nora Darhk (Courtney Ford). So going into season 6, the series will only have two members of its original cast, Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell). In addition to that, Charlie (Maise Richardson-Sellers) left the team in the season 5 finale. And with Sara missing, Ava Sharpe (Jess Macallan) has taken over as team leader. For Legends of Tomorrow more so than the other shows, radical changes to the team roster aren't so surprising, since that's been the nature of the series from the very beginning.
