After months of speculation, brought on by a few images and some vague descriptions that seemed to focus on the concept of "edgy" and "grounded," The CW has finally given viewers their first glimpse at Stephen Amell in action as Oliver Queen, soon to be known as the green-hooded crime fighter, Arrow.
After Smallville ended last year, and superheroes continuing to be a hot commodity – as evidenced by The Avengers impressive box-office haul – now is the prime time for The CW to get another costumed vigilante onto television screens everywhere. And, as luck would have it, their choice of DC Comics hero Green Arrow was right on the money, considering his Marvel Comics equivalent, Hawkeye, is currently lighting up the big screen with his quiver of trick arrows.
As seen in the trailer above, though, Arrow is taking a gritty, ab-busting approach to ridding Starling City (instead of Star City) of crime, while investigating the disappearance of his father, Robert Queen (Jamey Sheridan). In the short sequence, it's clear why the producers opted to begin the story of Arrow anew, rather than continue the adventures of Smallville's Green Arrow Justin Hartley.
Unlike the superhero-filled world of Smallville, this series clearly derives most of its tone and story cues (young billionaire returns to his city in an effort to oust the criminal element) from Christopher Nolan's Batman films – which, considering Nolan's Dark Knight swansong hits theaters this summer, will likely leave many fans clamoring for something similar. Added to the fact that Arrow is being paired with Supernatural on Wednesday nights, and The CW may have its own block of must-see-TV.
For more information on Arrow, check out the network's official synopsis below:
"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.
By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.
The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance."
