When Supergirl returns for its second season, the show will be airing on its new home network of The CW following its official move from CBS earlier this year. The Girl of Steel will be joining fellow DC Comics series co-created by Greg Berlanti - Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow - to anchor The CW's primetime fall lineup in the same Monday 8pm time slot. Given the move, CW president Mark Pedowitz already promised fans the "biggest" superhero crossover later this year.
Arrow star Stephen Amell, who is one of the most vocal stars of The CW's DC television universe, has commented on the crossover as well, saying he believes it will take place over four nights in a single week. Plus, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed the crossover will focus on Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist). Now, Amell has offered fans a sneak peek at another highly anticipated aspect of Supergirl season 2: The arrival of Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin).
Amell posted a photo of himself with Hoechlin in costume as Superman on his official Instagram account, captioning it: "You'll never believe who I ran into today..." Take a look at the photo:
Prior to its second season, production for Supergirl moved from Los Angeles, California to Vancouver, Canada in an effort to cut costs. So, the series now films in the same city as Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, which made it easier for Amell to visit the set. However, considering Amell is not in costume, it would appear to simply be a friendly visit rather than the result of filming a secret crossover.
Based on what we know of Hoechlin's Superman role at this point, he'll appear in the first two episodes of Supergirl season 2. But, it's unclear whether he'll return to the role beyond those two episodes and, if so, when he will. Additionally, this photo with Amell isn't our first look at Hoechlin in costume. The CW previously unveiled an official look at Hoechlin as Superman alongside Benoist's Supergirl, plus fans have gotten to see him in costume in set photos as well - even going through the famous transition from Clark to Superman.
For fans of the Man of Steel, Supergirl season 2 will provide a new version of the famous DC Comics hero, and Hoechlin has previously spoken about the pressure of bringing such a beloved character to life in live-action. Depending on the fan reaction to the actor's take on Clark Kent, it remains to be seen if viewers will hope to see Hoechlin's role extended beyond two episodes - though, of course, it's unlikely a show focused on Supergirl will feature Superman too heavily. Still, since Clark is Kara's cousin, it would make sense to have Superman appear as more than an indistinguishable figure or an online message bubble on Supergirl going forward.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday, October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same time slot on Wednesday, October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday, October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday, October 13th.
