While hero Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) has had a lot of trauma and loss to deal with during the first four seasons of Arrow, those around him have suffered just as much. Oliver's sister Thea (Willa Holland) has lost both her parents, been manipulated to commit murder by her surprise biological father Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), and been resurrected from the dead with very violent side effects.
The end of season 4 saw Thea further scarred by Damien Darhk's (Neal McDonough) nearly successful plan to end the world, and the death of her boyfriend Alex (Parker Young). She understandably wanted to take a step back from the endless violence and put at least a temporary hold on her role as vigilante crimefighter Speedy. It wasn't yet clear what new path she would take in life, but now we have word she won't be straying too far from her brother's side.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that Oliver's new job as mayor of Star City means there's an opening for Thea as his chief of staff. He elaborated:
"Perhaps, to her own surprise, she’s actually really, really good at it. All the skills that she learned by watching her mother for all those years, as well as running Verdant, she’s found very transferable to City Hall, and in many ways, she’s a much better chief of staff than Oliver is a mayor."
Since it seems Thea will be focusing all of her attention on her work, it's no surprise she'll be better at it than her brother, who will once again be trying to reconcile his day job with his moonlighting gig as the Green Arrow. With only Felicity and possibly some new recruits to help, Oliver is going to have his hands full in his never-ending battle against crime and newly-emerging enemies like Tobias Church (Chad L. Coleman).
In the early years of Arrow, the writers weren't always sure what to do with Thea, and her qualifications for running nightclub Verdant were pretty ludicrous at the time. Now that her character has evolved and become stronger, had that business responsibility and been involved in Oliver's mayoral campaign, this new role doesn't seem too far-fetched. What will be interesting to see is how much she learned from her mother's ruthlessness, and if she'll find the moral gray areas of politics ultimately more challenging than solving problems with her fists and a bow and arrow.
