There's a lot of work to be done in Star City in the wake of the chaos Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) brought before his timely demise in the season four finale of Arrow. Behind the scenes, it looks like producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg are pulling away from super powers and moving back toward a more level playing field. It was announced that the new villain for the CW staple was to be a major crime boss who had a "large and intimidating" frame.
Earlier in June, producers teased that they were looking to acclaimed HBO series, The Wire, for inspiration for their main villain for season five. Well, it seems that report was more literal than we thought, because Arrow literally plucked an actor from The Wire for this role.
IGN is reporting that Chad Coleman, who is probably best known for his role on as Tyreese on AMC's The Walking Dead and more recently played Colonel Fred Johnson on SyFy's The Expanse, will be the big bad for season 5. Coleman is an excellent choice given his penchant for playing the slow build to anger so well.
With seemingly no connection to the comics, Coleman's character Tobias Church (originally named Anton Church) is said to be a Godfather, of sorts -- seeking to unite all the criminal enterprises in Star City under his rule of law. There will be no beating around the bush because we can expect Church's first appearance in the season five premiere. Seen as an "imposing gangster," Church is moving in and striking while the iron is hot. Like any good criminal enterprise, he's got to establish himself as the biggest and baddest game in town while there is a power void in the city.
In addition to dealing with the aftermath of Darhk's destruction, Arrow's fifth season will see lots of regular folks stepping out of the shadows and defending their home. Despite Team Arrow being essentially dissolved, Oliver won't have to rebuild Star City completely on his own. He'll have help from some new vigilantes including Wild Dog (Rick Gonzales), Vigilante (Josh Segarra), and Artemis (Madison McLaughlin), that we know of so far.
The Arrowverse returns to The CW with season 3 of The Flash on Tuesday October 4th at 8ET; season 5 of Arrow in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th; Legends of Tomorrow's second season returns on Thursday October 13th; and Supergirl's season 2 premieres on its new home on Monday October 17th.
