While never existing in the Green Arrow comics from the beginning, John Diggle (David Ramsey) became one of the biggest gifts to come out of Arrow’s run. Starting out an original character for the series, DC Comics eventually made this character part of the canon which says a lot about Diggle’s reception by fans and critics. While Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) has had many important people in his journey, the show would definitely not have been the same without someone like Diggle to join Oliver’s crusade. What could have easily become a typical sidekick character, Diggle was never defined by his alliance with Oliver as he was just as much of a hero as he was.

Diggle has gone through so much to the point where he is one of the top superheroes in the entire Arrowverse franchise. While it does seem like there are more plans for Diggle, following Arrow’s end, the character has ended an era with Oliver now gone. With that said, it’s time to look at 10 of Diggle’s best moments in the whole series.

Diggle Discovering Barry’s Super-Speed

Crisis The Flash Barry Diggle Flashpoint

What became so iconic with Diggle was that not a lot seemed to throw him off his guard. Diggle always kept his cool when it came to most of the crazy things that were going on in Starling City. But then Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) happened as the Arrowverse became a multi-franchise with its first spinoff The Flash. Not having seen super-powers previously, the first crossover the two shows ever did is where Diggle got to stand out in a hilarious way.

While the following crossovers would have Diggle either throw up or be shaken up every time he experienced super-speed, his first time is still too iconic. Following Diggle dropping all of his fries, his stare at Barry is what cracks up everyone because viewers had never seen him this surprised before.

Meeting Grown Up Connor Hawke

Arrow Connor Hawke

The final season was an emotionally charged one for all of the characters as their greatest battle was coming up. But an added twist of the characters from the future changed the dynamic up quite a lot as Oliver and Diggle witnessed their kids arriving from 2040 as grown-ups.

But for Diggle, it was a bit more special as he was witnessing a child that he didn’t even know he would adopt: Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones.) While it added for some powerful performance by both actors, it was also a powerful character moment for Diggle and Connor.

Beginning His Partnership With Oliver

While it became one of the best Arrowverse partnerships of all time, it took a bit for Oliver and Diggle to become allies in the beginning. Once Diggle had discovered that Oliver was the mysterious vigilante, he reacted in a very understanding way where he didn’t want anything to with Oliver at first. It’s a perfectly normal way to the reaction of Diggle because what Oliver was offering was a lot to take in.

But once the two men had found some common ground in how this would work, Diggle agreed to join Oliver’s crusade. That was the first step in what would begin an amazing brotherhood for the two of them.

Killing His Irredeemable Brother

Andy Diggle Arrow

Season 4 is, without a doubt, the show’s most controversial season of all time for the Emerald Archer. With a mixed take on a magic-based villain to the questionable death of Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Katie Cassidy), it was a massive spiral down for Arrow, to say the least.

One of the problematic characters that came from it was Diggle’s little brother Andy who John had thought was dead for all these years. But the brother reunion wasn’t ideal as Andy had joined Damien Darhk on his villainous quest. Despite Diggle’s efforts in saving Andy, there was no hope.  While it’s extreme, killing his own brother was, in a way, one of Diggle’s best decisions as Andy was in so many ways a lost cause.

Diggle Marrying Lyla (Again)

Diggle and Lyla Arrow

One of the main relationships to come out of Arrow was Diggle and Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson), long before viewers found out that Lyla had a massive role to play in Crisis on Infinite Earths. But before she became Harbinger, she was Diggle’s wife and their history was not an easy one, to say the least.

However, the two always seemed to found their way back to each other in the end. Even during all the craziness that they went through on Arrow, they still managed to get re-married during the third season.

Being Completely Chill Over Meeting The Devil

Tom Ellis as Lucifer in Crisis on Infintie Earths

One of the biggest surprises coming out of the recent crossover was Tom Ellis’ cameo as Lucifer Morningstar from Lucifer.

Despite having debunked the rumors that he was in the crossover, the Devil himself turned out to be in the massive 5-hour event for a few minutes. While it was for barley 3 minutes, seeing the popular Vertigo-based character make it into the Arrowverse was a lot of fun. But it was even more hilarious was the fact that Diggle wasn’t shaken at all by the fact that the Devil was real.

Diggle Getting His Final Spartan Costume

One of the most requested things for Diggle, once the Arrowverse expanded, was to get him into a costume. With him risking his life season after season on the field, it was weird how he never got to have a proper costume that would not only protect his identity but also his life as a whole.

As the series had Diggle go under the name Spartan, his costume went through several stages of evolution. From his first version of the helmet to his leather suit changing colors, it’s the final incarnation of the suit that became the best one. In the season 8 premiere, Diggle debuts his newest Spartan look which is pretty much the closest thing fans would get to see Ramsey in a Green Lantern-esque costume.

The Day They First Met

Arrow-Diggle-Oliver

The pilot for Arrow will always be one of the show’s greatest hours as it began so much for The CW’s DC TV adventures. While fans may not have known in the beginning how crucial Diggle would be in the long run, the series premiere is when he and Oliver first meet.

Oliver convinced that he doesn’t need a bodyguard, does everything he can to shake Diggle off. But his hilarious attempts were unsuccessful, making it clear that Diggle was 100% serious.

Diggle’s Eulogy To Oliver

John and Lyla at Oliver's funeral

Oliver’s funeral was perhaps the most emotional part of the entire series finale. With so many characters, past and present ones united to honor their fallen hero, Diggle gets the biggest moment out of all of them. The speech that he delivers during the funeral becomes one of Ramsey’s all-time best performances as viewers could feel how heartbroken Diggle was over Oliver’s death.

Finding The Green Lantern Ring

John Diggle finds a Green Lantern ring

While there seem to be more adventures coming up for Diggle, his final moment in Arrow was the biggest payoff for many fans out there. As Diggle is in the process of preparing for his move to Metropolis, he gets one final surprise while in Star City. A mysterious alien box crashes to Earth, specifically to where Diggle is at.

While viewers never get to see what’s inside the box, the green glow that shines pretty much confirms that Diggle’s future as a Green Lantern was in the making. Hopefully, fans will get to see Diggle put that ring on and become the Emerald Knight in any of the ongoing shows down the line.
