Some may have thought they were the victim of an April Fool's Day prank (as many were by our own masterful deception), but indeed, a sequel to the Danny DeVito / Arnold Schwarzenegger odd-couple comedy Twins is on the way - and it's pretty much what we predicted it would be.
Triplets will see DeVito and Schwarzenegger's estranged twin brothers discovering that they are in fact part of a trio, when they stumble upon their long-lost sibling who will be played by Eddie Murphy.
Well, Coming Soon actually learned that Triplets would be happening awhile back when they spoke to Schwarzenegger himself about his other upcoming film projects (which include The Expendables 2 and the action/thrillers The Last Stand and Schwarzenegger/Stallone teampup The Tomb). See what "Ahnuld" had to say about the project while it was still in the early stages of development:
"I would love to do another 'Twins... As a matter of fact, we’ve been talking about doing one and it’s called 'Triplets.' I’d find somebody like Eddie Murphy or someone that people would say, 'How does that happen, medically speaking?' and, 'Physically, there’s no way!' Then, somehow, we would explain it. That would be hilarious with what we know about someone like him."
"I can see a poster... A billboard with us three. 'They found another one!' 'Triplets!' 'Only their mother can tell them apart!' I would do that in two seconds, because that’s real entertainment. You come out with that movie for Christmas, like December 5th or something like that, and you’re home free."
We can't help but brag about the fact that - back when Arnold was first announcing his return to acting - our own Paul Young predicted that a Triplets movie could happen. That it has Murphy starring as the new brother (we suspect a "brutha / brother" joke is somewhere on the horizon) is only icing on the cake, as the dramatic irony regarding the contrasting physicality of the principal actors is what made Twins such comedic gold in the first place.
While some people were nauseted at the thought of this project, it seems many more have acknowledged that the sequel at least has the potential to be a hilariously good time - not to mention, a good boost for Murphy and Schwarzenegger's film careers. Oddly enough, it's DeVito who is currently the most successful actor out of the trio - what with his role as Frank Reynolds on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and a recent box office cash-grab voicing the titular character in The Lorax.
We'll keep you updated on the development of Triplets as more news comes to light.
