When Arnold Schwarzenegger officially confirmed his return to acting, The Governator cartoon series wasn't exactly what anyone was expecting to be announced as his first project. The former bodybuilder (and ex-politician) fortunately plans to get back to doing live-action fare as well, and early word is that he's selected his comeback vehicle: Ji-Woon Kim's The Last Stand.
Liam Neeson was set to star in Kim's English-language debut for a while, but the director revealed that's no longer be the case just over a month ago. I suppose if you have to replace the star of Taken in your action movie, who better than the star of Predator, The Terminator, True Lies, etc., etc.?
The Last Stand is part thriller, part modern-day western about a U.S. sheriff who maintains order around the U.S.-Mexico border. Life takes a turn for the exciting when an escaped drug dealer gets ahold of a "super car" and attempts to escape justice by crossing over into Mexico - and only the sheriff can stop him.
/Film and Movieweb are both reporting that while Schwarzenegger hasn't finalized a deal to appear in The Last Stand just yet, it could become officially set in the near future. If it doesn't... hey, at least we still have The Governator, right? :-P
When Kim spoke about his English-language debut before, he had the following to say:
“My concept for 'The Last Stand' is that it’s kind of a combination of 'Die Hard' and 'High Noon' where [the latter] was about protecting something very important that needs to be protected, while 'Die Hard' is a very drawn-out, long process that almost kills someone in the process, so my film will be [about] something that has to be very well protected and in the process, we almost die protecting it in a way."
It certainly sounds like a fitting vehicle for Schwarzenegger - playing an aged but still intimidating lawman, that is - and Kim's previous genre films like The Good, The Bad, The Weird and I Saw the Devil are definitely memorable pieces of cinema. The combination of these two talents is certainly something I'd be interested in checking out, all things considered.
Keep your eyes peeled for some official news about Schwarzenegger joining (or not) The Last Stand in the near future.
