Army of Thieves is prequel to Army of the Dead and set on the other side of the world, so audiences might not expect to see actors like Dave Bautista or Omari Hardwick show up, but there is one way members of the Las Vengeance team could still make an appearance. So far, Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) are the only characters from Army of the Dead confirmed to be seen in Army of Thieves, but a few more characters from the original movie show could easily show up.

While Army of the Dead was directed by Zack Snyder and featured a number of well-known actors like Dave Bautista, Theo Rossi, Omari Hardwick, Garett Dillahunt, and Ana de la Reguera, Army of Thieves' heist team features actors who are a little less well-known, although many people should still recognize some of them, particularly Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones and all the Fast and Furious movies since Furious 7. Viewers will certainly recognize Matthias Schweighöfer (who also directed Army of Thieves)  after his stand-out performance in Army of the Dead, and the most recent trailer showed an image of Hiroyuki Sanada's Bly Tanaka, revealing he's also the owner of the safe's Dieter will be cracking in this film, like the Götterdämmerung safe in Army of the Dead, although it's not clear if he has a role in the movie beyond the image and name drop.

Most of the rest of Army of the Dead's cast is on the other side of the world during the events of Army of Thieves, so they're not going to be involved in the plot or interact with the characters in any way, although Sanada's brief cameo in the Army of Thieves trailer proves there's a way for anyone to show up, particularly since Dieter is following news coverage of the Vegas zombie outbreak on TV. Since the members of the Las Vengeance team, including Scott Ward (Bautista), Vanderohe (Hardwick), and Maria Cruz (de la Reguera) were known as the top zombie killers during the zombie war where they also saved the United States Secretary of Defense and won the Medal of Freedom, the highest award given to a civilian in the United States. As such, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them make an appearance during a news broadcast about the zombie war in Las Vegas during the events of Army of Thieves.

There's only a few quick shots of the Vegas zombie outbreak shown in the trailer, and it's not likely to be featured much more than that unless it happens to be a common news feature on screens in the background throughout the movie. Either way, it would make sense to utilize unused footage from Army of the Dead's principal photography, but they could have also easily shot a few extra clips during Army of the Dead production to take advantage of the production value and readily available zombie actors, make-up, and the Las Vegas setting since none of those resources are necessary for the rest of Army of Thieves. If that's the case, the lead actors would have already been present and could easily be glimpsed in the background of the broadcast or even showcased as zombie war heroes, or possibly even shown in an interview with, which would be an especially comedic opportunity for someone like Tig Notaro's over-the-top sarcastic Marianne Peters.

Army of Thieves is ultimately a movie that focuses on Dieter, who meets the team for the first time in Army of the Dead, so it may make the most sense for him to not have a pre-existing familiarity with any of his fellow squadmates from that movie; however, Army of Thieves' trailer revealed he's already familiar with Bly Tanaka, and likely vice-versa, since he broke into the billionaire's three other safes by that point, and yet he doesn't show any signs of recognition when they meet face to face in Army of the Dead. Either way, there's plenty of unused footage available of the Army of the Dead cast fighting in the zombie war from the first movie's production, and the perfect opportunity to include in Army of Thieves' news broadcasts, so viewers should keep an eye out for any fun Easter eggs or other connective tissue of that nature.
