Army of the Dead 2 Title Revealed: Planet of the Dead

Zack Snyder and Netflix are working on Army of the Dead 2, a sequel to Snyder's zombie action epic. The director's highly anticipated follow-up to his stint in the DCEU, Army of the Dead followed a group of ragtag mercenaries into the Nevada desert, led by Dave Bautista's Scott Ward. Tasked with stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from a vault underneath a casino, the group fight their way through hordes of zombies with most of them dying in the process. Snyder's film was filled with Easter Eggs, laying the groundwork for a vast mythology begging to be explored.

In addition to the aliens spotted in the opening scene of Army of the Dead, everything from alpha zombies to robot zombies were seen in the film. The ending of the film certainly alluded to the Army of the Dead's franchise potential. Scott Ward's daughter, Kate (Ella Purnell), was one of two, possibly even three, people to make it out Las Vegas alive, with Omari Hardwick's Vanderohe also surviving the nuclear blast thanks to the fact that he was caught in the safe underneath the casino. In a last minute twist, it's revealed that Vanderohe has also been bitten by one of the zombies as he is stuck on a plane to Mexico City.

Now, THR reports that Snyder has signed an overall first-look deal with Netflix. This will include the development of Army of the Dead 2, which the director will complete after his other project with the streamer, Rebel Moon. No other details are known at this time.

Nora Arnezeder and Dave Bautista in Army of the Dead

Netflix recently revealed that Army of the Dead was watched by 75 million households in its first 28 days on the streamer, shooting into the top 10 of their most watched films ever. It currently sits in the eighth position on the chart, tied with Project Power. Snyder had been in development on Army of the Dead for years and the director was a huge get for Netflix after his tumultuous relationship with Warner Bros. over the last few years. It was clear from the beginning that the streamer saw franchise potential in the film and Army of the Dead's viewership numbers indicate they were right.

While no plot details were given about the sequel, there are certainly a few ways it could go. With Vanderohe on his way to Mexico City, it's clear the zombie plague will be spreading to that country. Snyder has also hinted that Matthias Schweighöfer's Dieter survived the events of Army of the Dead, making it quite possible that he could show up. How Purnell's Kate Ward will be involved is an open question, too, but those three faces will likely make an appearance in some capacity. With no release date set, Army of the Dead 2 remains a mysterious project, one that Snyder likely knows the secrets to even if the rest of the world doesn't.
