Found footage is still trending in the horror movie world, as evidenced by today's trailer for Area 407, a film by directors Dale Fabrigar and Everette Wallin. The premise (as thoroughly laid out by the trailer) is that a group of people on a flight crash land into a secret government testing ground, where they are hunted down by some mysterious predator(s?).
Unless this film has some kind of twist up its sleeve (and I wouldn't bet on that), this basically looks like a mix of The Grey and Jurassic Park - only not nearly as good as either of those films. I mean, it honestly seems - judging by the footage in this trailer - like these people have landed smack dab in the middle of the raptor pen in Jurassic Park. Add in some second (or third-)tier effects to create the beasts, a cast of unknown (and in a lot of cases, untested) actors, and the inevitable shaky-cam filming style and (presumably) abrupt ending that are hallmarks of the found-footage sub-genre... and Area 407 quickly begins to hold more appeal as a rental.
...Luckily for you, that's just how you can see it!
According to STYD, the movie will be hitting Video on Demand at the same time it hits screens in limited release, on April 27th, 2012. So, if you figure this for good home viewing over a theater experience, you'll be getting exactly what you want.
