The official trailer for Netflix’s new supernatural thriller series ARCHIVE 81 introduces a conspiracy involving lost tapes and creepy cults. The 8-part drama follows Mamaoudou Athie’s Dan Turner, an archivist attempting to restore damaged videotapes from 1994. When he comes across messages left in the past by a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras, Dan finds himself pulled into a perilous conspiracy with the show following both unlikely heroes as they attempt to unravel the truth. As Dan finds himself increasingly drawn to Melody, he wonders if he can find a way of saving her 25 years later.

The series is based loosely on a popular mystery-horror podcast of the same name and has been brought to screen by Rebecca Sonnenshine of The Boys and The Vampire Diaries fame. The Conjuring’s James Wan serves as an executive producer, while original podcast creators Daniel Powell and Marc Sollinger have also overseen the production. Alongside Athie as Dan, the supporting cast includes Altered Carbon’s Dina Shihabi and Tenet’s Martin Donovan.

In a new official trailer from Netflix, the conspiracy-driven plot is showcased. Dan is seen discovering Melody’s messages while repairing the tapes, as viewers get brief glimpses of the dark and dangerous forces coming his way. As well as her cries for help there are cloaked cults, ethereal energies, and static-ridden videotapes. As tension builds, Dan seems to become more and more enraptured by the secrets he’s exploring. While the secret societies move in the present, the trailer ends with a distressed Melody calling out through the lost 90s tape “Please find me.” The series looks to combine a mystery-driven plot with the popular conspiracies regarding lost retro media. Show-runner and producer Sonnenshine promises a “unique, visually-textured story” in the new thriller, which is inspired by mystery-box stories such as Lost. Driven by its central characters, Sonnenshine says that the show also explores “art, faith and the search for identity” all through a meta-textual lens that involves “forgotten media” and found-footage formats. The attachment of horror maestro James Wan has given the show a big boost in hype, after his recent project Malignant became a sleeper horror hit of 2021.

The new trailer shows off the exciting and intriguing story of the new Netflix show, which looks to be a must-watch for horror fans, film geeks, and conspiracy lovers alike. With Sonnenshine’s passionate approach to the story and Wan’s prestigious track record with the supernatural, ARCHIVE 81 is sure to make an impact when it debuts. ARCHIVE 81 premieres exclusively on Netflix on Friday, January 14.
