Despite the focus being on movies, Netflix's Arcane show might finally have the blueprint to be the best video game adaptation yet. The release of every upcoming video game movie seems to prompt a discussion about which one takes this title, but perhaps movies shouldn't be the focus for these adaptations. With stunning animation, a solid cast, and lore that further develops the world players already love, the Arcane series has a chance to do what the movie adaptations before it have been unable to.

Plenty of beloved video games have been adapted into movies throughout the years — Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil, just to name a few — with varying levels of success. Now, it seems production companies are trying their hand at video game TV shows instead. Netflix alone has a growing list of upcoming adaptations of big titles like Assassin's Creed and Devil May Cry, HBO is preparing to release a live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic The Last of Us, and Paramount+'s Halo series is highly anticipatedVideo game adaptations are making a loud entrance as an up-and-coming genre of TV series, and Arcane has what it takes to lead the pack and create a blueprint for video game adaptations that come after it.

A few factors set Arcane apart from the movies that have come before. Most importantly, the series format is superior to the movie format when it comes to adapting video games. Games with long, complex storylines suffer when they're compacted into a two-hour movie, for example, the movie adaptation of Silent Hillwhich lost a lot of its substance in being translated from video game to movie. Over the span of nine episodes, Arcane will have more time to navigate the complicated lore that the prequel aims to add to the League of Legends universe. Instead of reducing an intriguing storyline down to nothing but the best explosions or jump scares, Netflix's Arcane will be able to unfurl a rewarding storyline with well-developed characters.

Arcane also has a chance at success because it's bringing something new to the League of Legends universe. As a prequel, the series is answering a major question from the video game: what happened to cause Jinx and Vi's bitter rivalry? The series aims to explore the lore of the universe, delving into the history that led up to the game that players know and love, even introducing three new characters into the world. At the same time, the series will remain true to the spirit and mythology of League of Legends. After all, Arcane is being developed and produced by Riot Games Inc., the company that created League of Legends, which gives the series a greater chance at staying true to the source material.

On top of a good storyline, Arcane also has beautiful animation. When League of Legends was first released in 2009, the graphics were pretty indicative of the time. Though the animation has been improved over the years, it's never quite reached the level that Arcane has managed to obtain. Behind the incredible animation, Arcane has a strong cast of voice actors, featuring Hailee Steinfeld as Vi, Ella Purnell as Jinx, and even more voice acting veterans. All of this combined means that Arcane has the blueprints to become the best video game adaptation out there.
