Two of the most powerful superheroes in their respective universes are DC’s Wonder Woman and Marvel’s Captain Marvel, and while on the surface it may seem as though the two are equals, the truth is Wonder Woman would end Captain Marvel in a second. Wonder Woman has undergone a number of continuity changes over the years, but none so dramatic as her New-52 incarnation. In that specific DC timeline, Wonder Woman has an ability that would ensure her victory over Captain Marvel.

In Wonder Woman Vol. 4 #23 by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang, Wonder Woman is battling the villain known as First Born who is trying to kill Ares and steal his godly power. Fighting alongside Wonder Woman for his own survival and for that of the world, Ares uses his power to control every soldier in his vicinity and raises an army against the villain. Ares and First Born engage in a one-on-one final showdown with First Born on the verge of killing Ares and taking the power of the God of War. Before First Born lands the final blow, Wonder Woman drives a spear through the villain and in the process accidentally kills Ares as well. With Ares’ death by the hand of Wonder Woman, the Justice League member gains his abilities, including the one she would use to defeat Captain Marvel immediately.

The ability Ares exhibited while fighting against First Born is now a power Wonder Woman can wield freely, the power to control military soldiers. Before Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel, she was a member of the United States Airforce making her a military soldier. If Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel ever found themselves at odds, Wonder Woman could simply use the powers she obtained from Ares and control Danvers, defeating her before any blows would be thrown.

The manner in which Wonder Woman could defeat Captain Marvel implies that Danvers isn’t the only Avenger Wonder Woman could take down without breaking a sweat. Based on her established power of being able to control soldiers, Wonder Woman could also beat Captain America and War Machine with a simple thought. Both Cap and Rhodey are established soldiers in Marvel continuity and would therefore be taken over by Wonder Woman’s godly power.

If Wonder Woman didn’t have the ability she inherited from the God of War, the fight between her and Captain Marvel would certainly be an interesting one. Captain Marvel has defeated Thor, as shown in Captain Marvel #12 “The Last Avenger” Part One, among other godlike cosmic beings across the Marvel Universe. With her fast amounts of power and fighting skills, Captain Marvel may even stand a chance at defeating Wonder Woman in a one-on-one fight. However, Captain Marvel would never get the chance to prove it as she would be defeated in a second by Wonder Woman’s forgotten superpower.
