Warning: contains spoilers for Aquaman #64!

Aquaman’s ability to “talk” to fish has made him the butt of jokes across not only the DC Universe, but pop culture in general, but now he is about to show everyone just what this ability can do! In Aquaman #64, by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel), artist Miguel Mendonca (Nightwing) and colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. (Savage Avengers), we get a hint of just what Aquaman can do with this power.

The ability to telepathically communicate with fish and other sea creatures has been a part of Aquaman’s character since his inception in 1941. How the power exactly works has changed over the years - some interpretations depict it more as a “nudge” than total command, and it does not necessarily work on all creatures. Some creative teams have shown more interesting aspects of the ability; for instance, in Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s seminal mid-90s JLA run, Aquaman was able to stretch the ability to be able to control any life that evolved from the sea; essentially any living thing on Earth. He has used it defensively too, using a pack of sharks to stop a horde of Parademons at the dawn of the New 52 continuity. Despite these cool facets of Aquaman's most famous power, many perceive it as useless, and later creative teams have played around with this, culminating in Aquaman's latest adventure.

In this issue, Atlantis is under siege from the evil Ocean Master, who is becoming desperate to prove his worth to rule the city. Queen Mera, the rightful ruler of Atlantis, is quickly taken off the table and it is up to Aquaman to stop Ocean Master. Aquaman taunts Ocean Master all throughout, finally forcing him to admit his true intentions. The two then fight.

Just as Aquaman stands ready to defeat him, Ocean Master’s henchmen fall on Aquaman and take him out. Ocean Master then goads him, asking as Aquaman slips away if he is going to “call some fish?” And it appears he does just that, as a telepathic signal shoots out of Aquaman’s head. We do not see what is coming, but the next issue blurb implies something is on its way. Aquaman’s ability to communicate with sea life may seem useless in light of the fantastic powers his fellow Justice Leaguers have, but it’s the type of ability that challenges writers to get creative. The power presents some fascinating possibilities for the character, and it looks as if DeConnick and her collaborators are poised to show a new side of this ability.
