Discussions about an Aquaman movie sequel are already underway. Warner Bros. and DC Films are launching their latest DCEU movie in just a few weeks, one that gives Jason Momoa's Aquaman the solo treatment. Aquaman has received positive reactions early on in the process and has reportedly given the studios confidence to begin discussing what Aquaman 2 could look like.

Momoa made a brief cameo as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but it wasn't until Justice League last year that he really got to show off his version of the underwater superhero. After just playing a supporting role in the team up movie, Aquaman will truly establish the character and the world that comes with him. Director James Wan (ConjuringFurious 7) is helping make this happen and has been able to do so with complete freedom. The solo movie shows Arthur Curry's return to Atlantis and hunt for King Atlan's Trident with Mera (Amber Heard).

How the solo movie ultimately plays out is not yet known for many, but the studios like what they've seen and the reactions they've heard. THR reports that the early response and box office projections of a $65 million opening weekend have given WB chairman Toby Emmerich enough confidence in Aquaman to begin sequel discussions. These talks are still in the earliest of stages, though, as no writer has been hired to this point.

WB and DC have no shortage of projects in development and it shouldn't come as a complete surprise that Aquaman 2 is something they're already thinking about. That said, this could make the sequel soon become a priority for the studio to make - especially if it can exceed box office predictions. The studios have already shown a willingness to move quickly on sequels by making Wonder Woman 1984 a major part of the studio's future. Additionally, there's already been some talk on a sequel to Shazam! as well, so the talk of Aquaman 2 is a good sign that the Momoa-led solo film will turn into a franchise.

For his part, Momoa already has ideas for where he wants to see Arthur go in a sequel and even pitched it to Emmerich. Even though the star wouldn't get into specifics on his pitch, it will be fascinating to see if Momoa's input and vision is implemented in Aquaman 2. Many are sure to want the studios to find a way to bring Wan back to direct as well, but it is not yet known if he would stick around. And even though the specific outcome of Aquaman is still a mystery, any sequel would likely feature more of Mera and could even elevate Black Manta to main villain status. We'll have to wait and see how exactly Aquaman 2 shapes up, but it does appear likely that it will happen as long as Aquaman just meets expectations.
