The final trailer for Aquaman has arrived ahead of the movie's December release, and we're here to break down the biggest reveals, and details that you might have missed. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, the heir to the throne of Atlantis, who must fight to prevent his brother Orm a.k.a Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) from starting a war that could devastate the planet - both above and below the waves.

Helping Arthur in his quest is fellow royal Mera, played by Amber Heard, who has some interesting abilities of her own. Together, Arthur and Mera must search for the lost Trident of Neptune, which was last seen in the possession of the late King Atlan, and is a weapon powerful enough to turn the tables in the fight against Ocean Master. In order to track it down they'll need to dig into the history of their people, and fend off attacks from Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his cronies.

Let's take a closer look at the final trailer for Aquaman, to see what the new footage reveals about the movie's plot and characters.

Arthur's Happy Childhood

Aquaman Trailer Arthur Curry as a Child

We actually get to see Arthur Curry at five different stages of his life in this trailer: as an adult, as a teenager, as a child, as a baby, and as this adorable chubby-cheeked toddler. In this scene, Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) teaches her son about his destiny with a little help from a teddy bear and a three-pronged fork. "Legend has it that one day a new king will come, who will use the power of the trident to put Atlantis back together again," she tells him - helpfully laying out the plot of the movie as well. If you look closely at the start of the trailer, you'll see a camera on the table when Atlanna and Tom Curry (Temuera Morrison) are holding their newborn son, indicating that they're taking their first family photo.

Ancient Atlantis

Aquaman Ancient Atlantis

When Atlanna tells Arthur about putting Atlantis back together, we see a visual of this with a statue literally being rebuilt. Notice that the statue's shield forms Aquaman's symbol, as does the gateway to the ancient city. Also notice that Atlantis is above land instead of below the waves. In DC lore, the home of the Atlanteans started out on the surface, but ended up sinking to the bottom of the ocean when a meteor struck the Earth.

Training With Vulko

Aquaman Arthur and Vulko

Willem Dafoe plays Nuidis Vulko, an adviser to the throne of Atlantis and Arthur Curry's mentor. We haven't seen much of Vulko in previous trailers for Aquaman, but here he plays a prominent role as we see him training Arthur to use his powers - in particular, advanced combat skills and the ability to swim super fast. It seems that Vulko have a teenage Arthur his "first swimming lesson" by making him jump off an extremely high cliff (which Arthur later revisits with Mera). We also see Vulko and Arthur training on the beach, with Arthur wielding a quindent, so clearly he gets given this particular weapon at an early age. Throughout the trailer, parallel shots are used to demonstrate how the skills that Arthur learned growing up become vital to his survival in later life.

King Orm In Full Armor

Aquaman King Orm

Aquaman's brother, Ocean Master, is a formidable opponent, and in this new trailer we're treated to the sight of him wearing his signature armor from the comic books (which comes with a cape, even though such a thing isn't very practical for swimming). Ocean Master is also wielding a trident of his own, but it's not the same trident that Arthur is seeking. Spinning blades can be seen behind him, but it's unclear what these belong to.

The Trident and the Quindent

Aquaman Quindent

Arthur Curry already owns a perfectly serviceable quindent, which he used to defeat waves of parademons in last year's Justice League. As such, when he's told to seek out a trident, he points out that he already has such a weapon - but Vulko replies, "Not like this one, you don't." The specific powers of the lost trident are kept vague, but it seems that its important lies as much in fulfilling a prophecy as it does in offering Arthur extra firepower. As the late King Atlan explains in a recorded message, "In the hands of the true heir, [the trident] would unite above and below."

Aquaman Atlanna and Atlantis Soldiers

Atlanna Fights Atlanteans

It's pretty ominous that we don't really see Queen Atlanna beyond her scenes with the toddler-aged Arthur - especially given these shots of her fighting Atlantean soldiers. She's certainly a skilled warrior, but it doesn't look like she wins this particular fight. At one point in the trailer, Tom Curry speaks of Atlanna in the past tense, telling Arthur, "Your mother always knew you were special." According to a preview that Screen Rant saw, Atlanna isn't killed in the battle, but rather is taken back to Atlantis in custody.

Black Manta In Atlantis?

Aquaman Black Manta in Atlantis

Aquaman's secondary villain, Black Manta a.k.a. David Hyde, isn't an Atlantean. He's actually a non-powered human who uses an enhanced suit to do battle both above and below the water, with the ability to blast powerful rays from the suit's eyes. In this one particularly intriguing new shot, David Hyde is seen outside of his super-suit in what appears to be Atlantis, being approached by a group of soldiers. According to Abdul-Mateen, Black Manta has a vendetta against Aquaman because he believes that Aquaman was responsible for the death of his father, so it's possible that this scene shows him approaching Ocean Master and offering an allegiance.

Mera's Water Blast Powers

Aquaman Mera Powers

Mera's role in Justice League was unfortunately cut down for the sake of a shorter running time, so we didn't get to see some of her cooler powers (including a cut scene where she literally pulls the moisture out of Steppenwolf's body). However, this trailer confirms that we'll get to see Mera wielding her water-bending abilities - including this one particularly cool shot where she's creating twin blasts in the water. In a previous trailer, Mera was shown drawing water from Arthur's forehead in order to activate an ancient Atlantean device. She should prove to be a formidable ally in Arthur's quest for the trident - and the movie's epic final battle.

Submarine Chase In Atlantis

Aquaman Submarine Chase

Just because Aquaman is largely set underwater, that doesn't mean we can't have a high-speed chase with fiery explosions. In this extended shot, we see ships that are shaped like stingrays chasing a high-tech submarine through the city - a powerful showcase for the fantastical world that Wan has created for the film.

More of the Big Battle

Aquaman Final Battle

The battle for Atlantis won't just be between Aquaman and Ocean Master - there'll also be a massive battle involving two huge armies. One faction involved in the movie will be Xebel, led by King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren), who is seen in this trailer being appealed to by Orm. However, Nereus is Mera's father, so he may end up fighting on Arthur's side instead. This particular battle seems to pit giant sea monsters against Atlantean tech; towards the end of the trailer, we see what looks like some kind of terrifying underwater dragon chomping down on a ship shaped like a snake.
