Warning! Spoilers ahead for Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1
In DC's special 80th anniversary issue of Aquaman, a featured short story reveals that Arthur Curry has his own version of Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth. Looking to rescue a massive volcano squid who's been attacked by a human submarine, the former King of Atlantis and Protector of the Seven Seas wants to get to the bottom of the situation, needing to know why this particular sub full of Russians is attacking sea life. In order to do so, Aquaman reveals a pretty hilarious means of getting to the truth, taking a page from Wonder Woman herself.
In the short story entitled "Foxtail" from writer Jeff Parker and artist Evan "Doc" Shaner, Aquaman is failing to telepathically connect with this volcano squid, who has its tentacles wrapped around the submarine with the intent to crush it. However, after willingly taking a hit from a fired torpedo meant for the squid, Arthur Curry realizes that the squid isn't responding to his commands because it is in great pain. Deducing that the cause iss a frequency cannon deployed by the sub, Aquaman quickly breaches the hull after destroying the cannon, looking to get some answers as to what this Russian crew is up to.
While the submarine's captain and his crew initially refuse to talk, Aquaman quickly convinces them to change their minds and spill the beans. Finally able to connect with the volcano squid who is still just outside the hull of the sub, Arthur threatens to use his 'Tentacle of Truth." Aquaman commands the squid to wrap one of its tentacles around the submarine's captain, squeezing until he starts talking. Clearly, this is a hilarious and pretty funny nod to Wonder Woman's magical Lasso of Truth, which magically compels those in contact with it to say nothing but the truth to the Amazonian hero. That being said, Aquaman's version seems to work just as well without magic.
Apparently, the cannon's function is to cause problems for any of the submarine's potential rivals, though the side effect is that it causes immense pain to the surrounding sea life such as this volcano squid. It's also behind the rising number of beached whales the former ruler of the seas has been told about. However, with the cannon destroyed and the sub compromised, Aquaman ironically has a pod of whales return the Russians home, but not before warning them about any future attempts to harm those in his domain, promising to station an Atlantean fleet in the area to make sure they comply.
In any case, the fact that Aquaman refers to aid from this squid as his "Tentacle of Truth" is super fun while also serving as a prime example of the various abilities he has at his disposal because of his communication with sea life. Thanks to his aquatic allies Aquaman is a veritable powerhouse, and it's also pretty cool that he's able to get their help to replicate one of the most impressive tools in Wonder Woman's arsenal in this special 80th-anniversary issue.
