Jason Momoa has revealed that ahead of filming DC's upcoming Aquaman film, he was offered a pearl of wisdom from none other than X-Men star Michael Fassbender. Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger in 1941, the character made his DCEU debut in 2017's Justice League. Although the film proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment, DC and Warner Bros remained steadfast in their plans for a solo adventure. The return of the sea-faring hero will mark the first standalone outing since the blockbuster team-up, with many fans hoping it'll serve as a turning point in the collective franchise.
The story will see the half-human partner with Amber Head's Mera to prevent a war between his two worlds. A recent clip revealed that he'll be sent by Vulko (Willem Dafoe) to recover The Trident of Neptune in order to achieve this goal. In the process, he'll be forced to battle his half-brother Orm, and the classic comic villain, Black Manta. The film also stars Dolph Lundgren, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews in a top-secret role. James Wan, who recently revealed a desire to direct a horror-based Batman film, served as director.
Speaking exclusively to RTE, Momoa revealed how Fassbender directly inspired him when filming Aquaman. When asked whether there was more of himself in this role than any he's played before, Momoa said that was indeed the case. "Unfortunately, yes," he said. The former Game of Thrones actor then went on the elaborate how Fassbender was the reason for such a creative choice. "He really told me to put in moments of me and find those moments that you can put you in the film so that it can shine through."
Momoa admitted that he isn't usually one to do the whole "name-drop thing," but the advice apparently stemmed from a conversation between the two friends that revolved around superhero roles. Fassbender is, of course, no stranger to such parts. He has played Magneto in three X-Men movies to date, with a fourth, Dark Phoenix, due to be released in 2019. As well as that, he also featured in both Jonah Hex and Zack Snyder's 300. "[Fassbender] was a big influence for me and I was doing that a lot in Aquaman," Momoa concluded. "So thanks, buddy!"
Although there will be a Man of Steel homage, it's unlikely that any other DC heroes will show up. With no current plans for Batman and Superman, a lot's riding on the reluctant king's shoulders to step up and become a central figure as the collective franchise moves forward. It remains to be seen what elements of himself Momoa injected into the role. Based on the positive early reactions, though, taking Fassbender's advice would appear to have paid off. As such, Aquaman could prove to be more than King of the Seas when it finally hits theaters.
