All the current buzz surrounding the DC Extended Universe might currently revolve around Wonder Woman, which comes out in just a few months, and Justice League, which just dropped a big trailer, but after that comes Aquaman, and based on the reactions to Jason Momoa in the Justice League trailer, Aquaman's stock has risen significantly in just a few days.
The timing of this increased interest in Aquaman couldn't be more fortuitous, as it happened to come just a few days before Warner Bros.' panel at CinemaCon, where they covered Wonder Woman, Justice League, and gave a the audience a first look at Aquaman. The movie hasn't even started shooting yet - Jason Momoa actually said he's going straight from the stage at CinemaCon to the airport to go shoot Aquaman - but James Wan provided a voiceover for some early concept art, and it sounds like those in attendance were quite impressed.
Comic book accuracy was touted a from several in attendance, specifically in reference to the look of Atlantis and the villain, Black Manta. During his narration, James Wan described his process for creating the underwater city:
"In a lot of ways, this is an origin story, so I want the audience to experience Atlantis the first time Aquaman experiences it as well."
One of the more thrilling descriptions surrounded the use of sea life and underwater environment, which Wan said couldn't have been created even just five years ago due to technological constraints.
Shark riding, underwater "dogfights" and massive sea creatures definitely inspire high hopes for the final outcome of this film. Needless to say, concept art doesn't always translate identically to screen, and some of these concepts may be outright scrapped for the final product, but it at least elicits confidence that the production is starting on the right track.
DC fans won't have to wait long to get a taste of Aquaman and Atlantis, as both will both be featured in Justice League this November, but, unfortunately, Aquaman's current December 2018 release date means a gap of over a year between Justice League and Aquaman, the longest gap betweenDCEU releases since the wait from Man of Steel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. On the bright side, these concept art descriptions make it sound like Aquaman will be well worth the wait.
