Warning! Spoilers for Aquaman: Andromeda #1 by DC Comics

In his new Black Label series, Aquaman received a new costume that not only gives the longtime Justice Leaguer a new look but gives him the dark design he deserves. In Aquaman: Andromeda #1 by DC Comics, Arthur Curry can be seen navigating the waters with an all-new look that makes him look seem more connected with the ocean than ever before, as Aquaman's colorful new ensemble is the perfect twist on the character's classic costume.

Aquaman is well-past being the butt of jokes, as the character's sillier Super Friends appearances and Silver Age history with DC Comics have been pushed to the side in the last two decades as the hero has become cooler than ever before. Making Aquaman a badass, after being primarily seen as a joke, began in the 90s and was most prominent in Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis' run on the character during The New 52 era. The Aquaman film starring Jason Mamoa continued making the hero seem cool to a general audience, becoming the highest-grossing DCEU film ever. Now, DC's Black Label is doing an even darker take on Aquaman in Aquaman: Andromeda.

Aquaman: Andromeda #1 by Ram V, Christian Ward, and Aditya Bidikar from DC Comics Black Label line features an all-new version of the King of Atlantis. Part horror and part science fiction, the story features a crew on the highly technologically advanced submarine, Andromeda, investigating an alien structure buried at the bottom of the ocean located as far from land as possible. The mysterious structure captures Black Manta's attention, leading Aquaman to the scene where Andromeda is sitting. However, the Aquaman who arrives is different from what readers are used to, sporting a dark new costume that is a brilliant new design for the hero.

Ward's spellbinding art beautifully captures Aquaman descending from the surface to the ocean world in his new attire. Arthur Curry's costume gives his usual armor a more crustaceous and ocean-like look. Aquaman looks like his armor has been sitting at the bottom of the sea for decades. Shells and plants from the seabed seem to have merged with his superhero outfit to create a unique ensemble. It perfectly fits the horror vibe from the comic, as seeing Aquaman take on a Kraken with his new outfit is about as badass of a moment as the hero's ever had.

Ultimately, the new costume for Aquaman is one of the characters' best. The dark costume fits the horror and sci-fi-tinged aesthetic of the stunning comic and ends up making for a great, bold look for the hero. This version of Aquaman is clearly prepared to take on monsters, both human and not, and all of the darkness found in the ocean, and has a costume that matches his mysterious mission. Aquaman: Andromeda by DC Comics is in comic book stores now.
