Jason Momoa reveals he had a hand in writing Aquaman 2. The former Game of Thrones star transformed into a superhero for 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where he made a quick cameo as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman. He received a much bigger role in Justice League, but it was the 2018 solo project Aquaman that truly gave Momoa the chance to sink into the role. Directed by James WanAquaman further explored Arthur's place as the half-human son of Atlantis, which put him in conflict with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson).

Both Momoa and Wilson are set to return for Aquaman 2, the long-awaited sequel. Wan will direct once more; additional returning faces include Amber Heard and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Despite the first Aquaman making over $1 billion worldwide, the sequel isn't scheduled for release until December of next year. As a result, little is known about the plot or new cast members. So far, only Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones) has joined Aquaman 2 as a newcomer to the DCEU. Several cast members have indicated production will begin in the coming months.

Momoa recently appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, where he shared some new information about Aquaman 2. Unfortunately, he couldn't reveal anything specific about the film itself. However, Momoa did share this particularly interesting bit of news: He had a hand in developing the story. Momoa explained:

"After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David [Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick] finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming."

Aquaman 2 Jason Momoa

Momoa's enthusiasm for Aquaman 2's story certainly bodes well for the entire project. His performance as Aquaman has been praised by fans, and there's a chance his time playing the character could've helped him develop a truly compelling story. Without any concrete plot details, it's hard to say just where Momoa and his writing partner might've found inspiration. It could be the comic books, or it could even have a personal edge from Momoa's own life. The possibilities are endless.

Momoa has hyped Aquaman 2 as a bigger movie than the first, and that movie went all the way to the depths of the ocean. Aquaman hails from a very rich world, so the sequel could perhaps explore it on a deeper level. As Momoa said in his above comments, filming is expected to begin this July so new information about Aquaman 2 could emerge within the next few months. Exactly when the story of the film will be released remains to be seen, but Momoa's excitement certainly helps ease the wait. After all, if he loves it so much he wanted to help write it, it must be pretty great.
