A new fan poster imagines Emilia Clarke in the role of Mera for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom rather than Amber Heard. The poster comes in the midst of Johnny Depp and Heard's ongoing defamation trial. Depp is suing his ex-wife, Heard, for $50 million over an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post. In the article, Heard alleged she was a victim of domestic abuse and, while Depp was not named, his lawyers claim it was obvious the article was about him. He denied the claims of abusing Heard, instead alleging that Heard was the abuser, and that her allegations had a significant impact on his career.

Meanwhile, Heard is countersuing and holds that she was never physically violent towards Depp unless it was in self-defense. The trial has gained significant media attention and sparked a social media frenzy of opinions and voices. As the trial continues, support for Heard has begun to wane. There has especially been much outcry over her being able to reprise her role as Mera in Aquaman 2 despite the abuse allegations against her, meanwhile Depp was fired from the Fantastic Beasts franchise after Heard's allegations against him.

While many are calling for the role of Mera to be recast, it is unlikely that it will be. After all, Aquaman 2 filming has officially wrapped already so swapping out Heard with another actress would be quite the hassle. Meanwhile, Aquaman 2's producer, Peter Safran, has indicated that there was never any discussion of Heard not reprising her role and that they will not give into peer pressure to recast her. With that being said, social media users are not backing down and a petition calling for Heard's firing from Aquaman 2 now has almost 3 million signatures. The petition has been gaining signatures ever since it first debuted on the internet in 2020.

Whether the role of Mera will be recast is ultimately left to the discretion of the studio. However, it is still intriguing to imagine other actresses whom might take up the role if Heard is removed. As for whether Heard should be removed from the film is also a difficult question to answer. Many want Heard removed because they are accusing her of lying and indicating that she is the abuser. This has not yet been proven, but the trial is beginning to show holes in her story. On the other hand, there are certainly factors that poke holes in Depp's innocence, too, such as text messages indicating he cut off his own finger and lied that Heard caused the injury. One therapist has suggested Depp and Heard committed mutual abuse and pointed to a likely scenario that neither is wholly innocent or guilty. Fortunately, Aquaman 2 fan art provides a nice departure from all the controversy and allows fans to enjoy the franchise by reimagining it with less controversial figures.
