Jason Momoa teases that multiple Batmen could appear in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. James Wan's Aquaman movie came out in 2018, becoming an instant hit among fans for its ludicrous fun, vibrant cinematography, and fast-paced action. The movie followed Momoa as Arthur Curry, with Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman appearing in key roles. Aquaman became DCEU's first to gross over $1 billion at the box office, and given its unprecedented success, a sequel was quickly greenlit, with Wan and Momoa both returning.
While anticipation for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has always been high, the sequel witnessed a surge in interest when Momoa revealed that Ben Affleck would return as Batman. Momoa has been tight-lipped on the story details pertaining to Affleck's Aquaman 2 role, but he has stated it was incredible to work with him again on set. Meanwhile, amid the WB Discovery merger, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been delayed from March 2023 until December 2023, and although it doesn't impact Affleck's role in the movie, a few other changes could be made.
Now, while addressing AP at the Red Carpet event for the final season of his Apple TV+ series, See, Momoa teases that Aquaman 2 could feature multiple Batmen. The star does not offer any explicit confirmation; rather, he playfully joked that fans only know a little, and Aquaman 2 could also have even less of Batman than what they are expecting. I cannot tell you anything about the reunion. He may or may not be in it, and there could be more or less, or even more Batmans in it. Who knows? You only know a little bit.
Even before the news about Affleck being in the movie broke, there were already reports that Michael Keaton's Batman is in Aquaman 2. In fact, his Caped Crusader reportedly popped up in the test screenings, but the appearance left audiences baffled, as they couldn't understand how Keaton's Batman fit into the universe. Since then, there have been arguments if Aquaman 2 includes both Batmen, or if Keaton's Batman role has been replaced by Affleck's, which was the more likely possibility before Momoa's comments.
His new tease complicates matters further, however. Fans have known for a while that The Flash would unveil the DCEU multiverse, so if Aquaman 2 takes place after that movie, it will make sense even if it has multiple Batmen. But amid the continuous reshuffling of the DCEU release calendar, it's hard to determine the franchise's original plan for Aquaman 2, considering the movie has been periodically set to premiere both before and after The Flash. The latest delay, however, puts it after, so it's possible to leverage the multiverse to feature both Keaton and Affleck. That said, it's unknown which Batman the DCEU will be sticking with long-term, so more should hopefully become clear as the premiere date for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom closes in.
