During the latest Apple Event, the Watch Series 6 and the Watch SE were announced. The latter of which is is the first SE version of an Apple Watch to ever be released, following on from the iPhone SE that launched earlier in the year. Both Apple smartwatches come with a variety of new features and very different prices.

While Apple announced two new smartwatches at the event, the company also confirmed that it is keeping the Watch Series 3 available as well. As a result, consumers now have a choice between three new Apple smartwatches. The two latest models are due to go on sale on September 18, with the Watch Series 6 starting at $399 and the Watch SE starting at $279. Both offer options for cellular data and GPS.

The Watch SE has many of the same features as the Watch Series 6. Each has fall detection, calling emergency services automatically if necessary. Both of the new watches are also swim-proof and their cases are made of 100-percent recycled aluminum. They both feature the most sophisticated microphone included in an Apple Watch, which is optimized for higher-quality phone calls. They each also have an always-on altimeter, which accurately tracks altitude using a new and more power efficient barometer. In addition, both also come with larger face sizes than previous versions, complete with larger retina displays and curved corners. Both Apple smartwatches are able to tap into Apple’s new fitness program, Apple Fitness+ and support the new Family Setup, letting users control a child’s Apple Watch settings accurately. When it comes to customization, they each also work with Apple’s newest watch bands, Braided Loop, Braided Solo Loop, and Leather Link.

Watch SE & Watch Series 6 Main Differences

Though the Watch SE has many of the features the Watch Series 6 does, there are also some differences. The Watch Series 6 runs on a new dual-core processor, the S6 SiP, which is based on the chip powering the iPhone 11, and is said to run up to 20-percent faster than other Apple watches. The Apple Watch SE is still two times faster than the Series 3, but it runs on the S5 processor, making the chip and related performance one of the defining differences between the two new wearables. Perhaps the biggest feature that sets the Watch Series 6 apart from the Watch SE is its ability to track blood oxygen levels. This feature can help users to track how quickly oxygen is delivered throughout their bodies, and can be very useful in determining health problems and generally implementing health strategies. This is Apple’s first, and currently only, smartwatch that’s able to track blood oxygen content.

Both of these smartwatches have a lot of great new features and Apple’s inclusion of a value smartwatch makes its Watch line more accessible to more individuals. The Watch SE has a lot of great features, and it is a great option for those who may not need a blood oxygen tracker. Overall, the two latest watches from Apple are surprisingly similar, in spite of the difference in price.
