As Maximo recounts his time at Las Colinas resort in the new Apple TV+ show Acapulco, he introduces his nephew to a colorful cast of characters that include his relatives, coworkers, and romantic rivals. Because the story is told from his perspective, the characters that he likes are portrayed in a more favorable light than those that he does not.

Some of the characters, such as Chad and Diane, are complicated figures with whom Maximo does not always see eye to eye, while others, like Gullermo, are fun and likable characters who support Maximo on his journey towards wealth and success.

Chad

Chad wears his work uniform in Acapulco

With Maximo as the narrator, Chad is one of the quasi villains of the show. His relationship with Julia prevents Maximo from making a move and the possible nepotism that got him his position causes Maximo to resent him, though the two do get closer as the season goes on.

Chad is not necessarily a bad person and he has moments, especially as he tries to live up to his mom's expectations, but from Maximo's perspective, he is an obnoxious and arrogant obstacle that makes his life more difficult. He also features in some funny culture clash moments but Maximo's disdain for him keeps him in an unfavorable light for most of the show.

Nora

Nora sits at the table in Acapulco

Maximo and Sara's mother, Nora, is a traditional and hardworking woman who does what she can to provide for her family and raise her kids right. She tends to be conservative and wary of any possible temptation, including Maximo's job at the resort, but the kids discover that she has another side and her own surprising past.

While she can be stern and authoritative, Nora always means well and is just doing her best to raise her kids. She is a relatable character who provides a strong moral compass for Maximo and Sara as they grow up and begin making difficult decisions.

Diane

Diane lays out by the pool in Acapulco

Former daytime television star Diane is the owner of Las Colinas, rescuing the resort from being bought by a larger chain. While she can at times be vain, she is a hard worker who has sacrificed a lot to cultivate her brand and set her son up for success.

Diane is deeper and more complex than the typical rich actress archetype and her more nuanced character is a great example of what makes Acapulco one of the best new shows of 2021. Additionally, her complicated relationship with Chad helps humanize both characters.

Don Pablo

Don Pablo welcomes guests to the resort in Acapulco

As the Head of Operations at the resort, Don Pablo oversees all of the employees and activities at Las Colinas. He is a self-made man who worked his way up the ladder and earned his position. He is a strong leader and becomes a mentor to Maximo.

Although Don Pablo can at times appear gruff and reserved, he is shown to be wise and caring. He treats his employees with respect and dignity, even letting them blow off their responsibilities to watch an important soccer match. His death prompts Maximo to reflect on his time at the resort and drives the story of this great new television show.

Julia

As pointed out by Hugo, the show is largely about Julia and Maximo's relationship with her. She is an ambitious character who dreams of becoming a designer with her own clothing line. Throughout the season, she is torn between staying with Chad and pursuing a relationship with Maximo.

It is not hard to understand why Maximo thinks so highly of her, considering how smart and likable she is. The will-they-won't-they tension between the two characters is one of the strongest aspects of Acapulco and helps make it one of Apple TV+'s best shows.

Sara

Maximo's younger sister Sara is the more adventurous and rebellious member of the family. She is a passionate character who always goes after what she wants. As an adult, she is able to jump into Maximo's storytelling and offer another perspective on the events.

Sara goes on a compelling journey of self-discovery throughout the first season as she comes to terms with her feelings and ends up in a fulfilling, albeit secretive, relationship. She genuinely cares about her family and always has Maximo's back.

Gullermo

Gullermo, also known as Memo, is Maximo's best friend and trusted confidant. He is an optimistic and often overconfident character who is stuck toiling away in the laundry room. Memo is a positive thinker who is always there to encourage Maximo.

Like many of Apple TV+'s best shows, Acapulco effectively balances humor and heart and Memo plays a huge role in that as he is a great comedic relief character who also offers some inspiring advice whenever Maximo needs to have his spirits lifted.

Hugo

Hugo and Maximo embrace in Acapulco

Maximo's young nephew Hugo is the audience's entry point into Las Colinas in the 1980s as he listens to his Uncle Maximo recount his experience at the resort. He interjects throughout the story, questioning the accuracy of the narrative or offering up his commentary on events.

Hugo brings a youthful innocence to the show, approaching everything his uncle tells him from a different perspective. He clearly loves his family and appreciates his uncle taking the time to impart his wisdom to him on his birthday.

Maximo

As the protagonist and narrator of the story, Maximo's perspective shapes the show, telling the story as he remembers it rather than how it actually happened. He is a sweet and charming character in search of a place where he belongs.

Because of the show's framing device, he is presented as both naive and innocent in the past and more shrewd and knowledgeable in the present after years of reflection. He is a kind and caring individual who is consistently willing to sacrifice for the sake of his friends and family.
