Apple's 9th-generation iPad is still the cheapest in the company's lineup, but can it make use of the upgraded feature set in the Apple Pencil 2? Initially, users could figure out what generation of Apple Pencil an iPad was compatible with just by looking at its design. For example, any iPad with large bezels, a curved design, and a Lightning port typically uses the Apple Pencil 1. Likewise, any iPad with small bezels, a flat-edge design, and a USB-C port tends to be compatible with Apple Pencil 2. However, this changed with the iPad 10th-gen, meaning users might need to research what Apple Pencil their iPad is compatible with.

Before finding out what generation of Apple Pencil is supported by a user's iPad, it may be worth checking the iPad's exact model. The base-model iPad generally held the same design for years — until the 10th-generation iPad debuted — so it's easy to get the generations mixed up. Find the iPad's model number by looking at the back of the tablet, or by navigating to Settings, tapping 'General' and then 'About.' Users can then check Apple's support page to match the model number to the correct iPad. If users confirm they have a 9th-gen iPad, they will be able to use the Apple Pencil 1.

Why iPad 9th-Gen Doesn't Work With Apple Pencil 2

The Apple Pencil 2 connects via a magnetic connector built into the side of select iPad models, and the 9th-generation iPad does not have this connector. The Apple Pencil 2 is compatible with specific iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Mini models. Apart from wireless charging, it also features a touch surface that can be used to change drawing tools quickly.

While iPad 9th-gen users might be disappointed about having to use the older Apple Pencil, the first-generation model is still a great option. It connects to the 9th-generation iPad through a Lightning connector housed underneath the Apple Pencil's cap. The Apple Pencil 1 is also $30 cheaper than the Apple Pencil 2, priced at $99. Apple also includes a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter in the box, which is required if users choose to upgrade to the 10th-gen iPad.

How To Pair Apple Pencil With iPad 9th-Gen

iPad 9th Gen with Apple Pencil

Connecting the Apple Pencil to the iPad 9th-gen is fairly straightforward. To begin, remove the cap of the Apple Pencil and plug it into the iPad's Lightning port. A 'Pair' button will appear on the screen. Tap it, and the Apple Pencil will instantly pair with the iPad. Apple notes that the Apple Pencil will remain connected to the iPad until users turn on Airplane mode, restart their iPad, or pair the Apple Pencil with a different iPad.

If the Apple Pencil disconnects, all users need to do is plug it in and pair it again for it to start working. If the Apple Pencil is low on charge, plugging it in for as little as 15 seconds should get it to work for about 30 minutes. A full charge takes about 30 minutes. Apple recommends charging it for at least one minute if the battery is low. Users can charge the Apple Pencil by plugging it into their iPad, or by using the charging adapter that comes in the box and connecting it to a wall charger.
