Apple Music is designed to work seamlessly with other Apple products — including the Apple Watch. It has an easy-to-use app, users can stream radio stations, and even download songs for offline listening. For people interested in that last point, setting up offline downloads takes just a couple of minutes.

It’s fairly common knowledge that Apple Watch users can download Apple Music tracks onto the device. But here’s a question — why would anyone want to do that in the first place? Picture this. Someone is ready to go out on a run or walk, they want to listen to music while doing so, and they have wireless headphones connected to their Apple Watch. If that Apple Watch isn’t an LTE model, that person will need to bring their iPhone with them in order to actually listen to anything. Since Apple Music requires an internet connection and non-LTE Apple Watches need to be connected to an iPhone for internet access, that can result in a pretty cumbersome setup. By downloading songs to the Apple Watch, it’s possible to listen to those downloaded songs directly on the wearable — no iPhone required.

To get started with downloading Apple Music songs to the Apple Watch, Apple’s instructions are quite clear. Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone, scroll down the page, and tap ‘Music.’ At the top of this page is an option called ‘Recent’ Music.’ If this is enabled, Apple notes that it will “Automatically add music you’ve listened to recently.” It’s a great way to seamlessly add music to the Apple Watch without manually choosing songs/albums, and it can be turned on just by tapping the toggle next to it.

How To Add Specific Songs & Albums To Apple Watch

Downloading Apple Music songs through the Apple Watch app

In addition to automatically adding recently played music, there’s also the option to choose specific songs to add to the Apple Watch for offline listening. Below the Recent Music option, tap ‘Add Music.’ This brings up another page showing someone’s Apple Music library, offering quick access to playlists, artists, albums, etc. Users can tap on these filters to quickly view music that way, or use the search bar at the top of the page to search for a title. After selecting an album or playlist to download, tap the ‘+’ icon at the top-right of the screen. This will add it to the download queue, with the download only beginning once the Apple Watch is charging and near the paired iPhone.

Last but certainly not least, it’s important to know how to delete Apple Music tracks from the Apple Watch. Thankfully, it’s just as easy as downloading them. On the same Music page in the Apple Watch app, swipe left on a downloaded album/playlist and tap the ‘Delete’ button. To delete multiple albums/playlists at once, tap ‘Edit’ at the top-right of the screen and tap the ‘-‘ icon next to all of the ones that should be deleted.
