The iPhone 14 and 14 Max will reportedly get a performance boost over the iPhone 13 lineup despite retaining the A15 chip. Earlier this year, renowned Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple would only offer a new chipset in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models while retaining the iPhone 13's A15 Bionic chip in the base iPhone 14 and 14 Max. The report, which multiple other sources have since corroborated, including Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, will mark the first time Apple will use different processors for different iPhone models from the same generation.

The iPhone 14-series is expected to offer four models: the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. According to multiple leaks over the past few months, most of the other big updates will also be reserved for the two 'Pro' models. That includes a notch-less design and better OLED technology for the display panels. Overall, the base iPhone 14 and 14 Pro will be relatively similar to the iPhone 13 lineup. However, if the latest report is anything to go by, the new devices might still get some performance boost over last year's models.

As pointed out by tipster ShrimpApplePro, some of the performance upgrades for the iPhone 14 Pro will be due to a new cellular modem and a new internal design. According to earlier reports, the new 5G modem could be smaller and offer more efficiency than the modem in the iPhone 13 lineup. The new modem is expected to support both mmWave and sub-6 5G, meaning the upcoming iPhones will support the fastest 5G technology offered by U.S. carriers. If the leaks turn out to be accurate, it is very likely that the base iPhone 14 and 14 Max will still provide a performance boost over the iPhone 13, as claimed by ShrimpApplePro.

Reports also suggest that all four iPhone 14‌ models might ship with 6GB of RAM, which would be an improvement over the iPhone 13-series models with 4GB of memory. However, there will still be a notable difference between the memory technology in the Pro and non-Pro models. According to a TrendForce report from June, while the two 'Pro' models will be upgraded to LPDDR5, the two base models will still ship with LPDDR4X memory.

Some of the other differences between the Pro and non-Pro models this year will include storage options and camera sensors. According to an earlier report, the two higher-end devices may start at 256GB of storage instead of the 128GB offered by the two vanilla models. In addition, the two Pro models will have up to 1TB of storage, while the base variants will only get up to 512GB. As for the cameras, Apple will once again offer dual-cameras with the base iPhone 14 models while reserving the triple-camera setups for its higher-end models.
