Apple has done a good job of releasing phones that appeal to the public. While the iPhone SE 2020 is an improvement over the iPhone 8, explaining in what respects requires some comparison. Some times the utility of holding onto an older model is a smart move for the wallet while at other times, picking up a new smartphone could be worthwhile, if it has just the right specifications.

Some enjoy the prospect of buying a good looking phone while others take on a more technical mindset when looking into their next device purchase. If the aesthetic that electronics take on is what's most appealing then newer phones should almost always take the lion's share of sales, but looking through specifications leaves little to the imagination when comparing a current smartphone with a newer model. However, as an invention first geared toward communication, it's worth taking the time to determine whether updated models bring something new to the table or if something old has since been made better? This is likely to be the question current iPhone 8 owners are asking themselves when considering 'upgrading' to the iPhone SE.

Apple has successfully made cosmetic and technical specs two arms of the same beast. The iPhone 8 with its gold, silver, and 'Space Gray' colors has a storage capacity of up to 128GB. Coming in at just over 5 ounces, the phone is 5.45 inches tall by 2.65 inches, with a 4.7 inch high-definition Retina display. The iPhone 8 also has a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a focal length of 1.28 on the aperture, and is capable of a 5X zoom. The newer iPhone SE 2020 comes in black, white, and Product Red, with a maximum storage capacity of 256GB. However, it does come with the same size, weight, display, and features the same primary rear-camera characteristics as the iPhone 8.

A Deeper Look At The Specs

There's more to the story than raw data on specs, and even more information to sift through. Other similarities between the iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 8 include the use of the iOS 13 operating system, Touch ID fingerprint sensors, and even the same IP67 rating for water resistance, providing protection while submerged to a depth of one meter, for up to 30 minutes. Both front-facing cameras are 7-megapixel with a 2.2 focal length aperture, as well as some other identical camera features. Both use the same Bluetooth 5.0 standard, have the same video calling capabilities, and both support FaceTime audio calling.

Some of the differences worth knowing are in terms of what the iPhone SE has over the iPhone 8. For example, The newer smartphone features Haptic Touch on the display instead of 3D Touch, and an A13 Bionic Chip to improve upon the iPhone 8's A11. For the rear-camera, there's the sapphire crystal lens cover and next-generation smart HDR, among other changes. Also new is the advanced audio calling with the SE 2020 supporting voice over LTE and Wi-Fi calling. The SIM has also changed to a Dual SIM on the iPhone SE, using both the Nano and eSIM, the latter of which requires a service plan which might not be supported by all carriers.
