According to a popular analyst, the Apple iPhone 14 could receive a massive upgrade to its front camera. The hype for iPhone 14 is already at an all-time high. After all, it's probably going to be the first iPhone to feature a significant design upgrade in some time. Ever since the launch of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple has kept the notch design well and alive in every model following. Apple equipped the iPhone 13 with the same notch, albeit a bit smaller, which disappointed the fans. However, a recent barrage of iPhone leaks suggests that the iPhone 14 will feature some significant upgrades, including a full-screen display and more.

Furthermore, the front iPhone camera hasn’t received a proper upgrade in two years. Apple iPhone 11, launched in 2019, was the last iPhone with a major front camera upgrade, featuring a 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture. It’s capable of recording up to 4k 60FPS footage with the additional capability of shooting 1080p 120FPS super slow-motion videos as well.

However, the upcoming Apple iPhone 14 could feature improved front camera hardware, as revealed by a tweet from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. All four Apple iPhone 14 models could feature an upgrade to the autofocus and a larger ƒ/1.9 aperture. For reference, the current iPhone 13 models have fixed-focus and a smaller ƒ/2.2 aperture. In a camera, a small f-number represents a big aperture and vice versa. These upgrades would noticeably improve portrait and cinematic shots in the iPhone 14. In addition, the smaller f-number also means a larger opening in the lens. Hence users could also see improved low light selfies.

These changes also spell an improvement for FaceTime on the iPhone 14, as per Ming-Chi Kuo. In general, the iPhone 14 will feature improved video call and live streaming capabilities. This also shows how Apple has a renewed focus on the FaceTime feature. During last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple dedicated a good chunk of the section to talking about FaceTime and its various capabilities. The iPhone 14 will also likely feature a pill-shaped notch, so it’d be interesting to see how such a design choice benefits the smartphone, specifically in the camera and security department.

With offices worldwide adopting a hybrid working schedule, features like FaceTime will become more popular. In addition, because iPhone sales keep breaking records, improving the front-facing camera on the iPhone 14 seems like a great way of making the smartphone another accolade in Apple’s portfolio. The next Apple iPhone launch event is scheduled for the second half of 2022, so expect more leaks to surface in the coming months.
