The iPhone 13 mini is not only Apple's tiniest smartphone. It's one of the smallest in the industry and the best small phone on the market. While Android phones seem to be growing every year, Apple is the only manufacturer that designed a flagship that is easy to manage with smaller hands and to fit into short pockets.

Apple's first iPhone measured just 4.5 by 2.4 inches but was nearly half an inch thick and had a 3.5-inch screen. Android phone sizes immediately began to grow, yet Apple kept the same display size for several more years before increasing to a four-inch screen on its iPhone 5. Apple must have been feeling the pressure by 2014, when it launched two sizes, an iPhone 6 and 6-Plus, both bigger, with the larger phone having a width over three inches and length over six inches to provide a 5.5-inch screen. 2017 saw Apple introduce the Face ID notch with the iPhone X, allowing a big screen in a more compact form. However, a small phone didn't arrive until 2019 with the budget-priced second-generation iPhone SE.

Apple's iPhone 13 mini is the very best small phone on the market and provides relief for anyone with short pockets or small hands. Everyone will enjoy being able to tuck the iPhone 13 mini in securely, while teens and more petite adults will appreciate being able to use the phone one-handed. The second-generation iPhone SE was small, but the iPhone 13 mini is even smaller. Since it has no home button and exposes more of the screen by using the notch, it measures a tiny 5.2 by 2.5 inches and is less than a third of an inch thick. Despite the diminutive size, the screen is relatively large at 5.4 inches. It has all the same features as the larger iPhone 13, including an A15 chip, dual rear cameras with increased brightness, and Ceramic Shield durability with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Apple's iPhone 13 mini is a true flagship phone.

Why Aren't There Small Android Flagships?

Samsung Z Flip 3 Folded Vs Apple iPhone mini 12 Back

This same technique would be easy to achieve for any number of flagship Android phone manufacturers, yet they don't. The iPhone SE was the best small phone in 2019, and the iPhone 12 mini was the best in 2020. For comparison, one of the smallest top-quality Android phones is Google's Pixel 5 from 2020, which is a half-inch longer and a quarter-inch wider than the iPhone 13 mini. But, of course, Google went bigger this year, and the Pixel 6 is a full inch longer than Apple's smallest phone.

Admittedly, the demand for small phones is not as strong, and most people seem willing to sacrifice a bit of convenience for a larger screen. It is the window on the internet, chatting with friends and taking photos. So naturally, as large as possible is nice. Samsung and Motorola offer a different take, making a phone that folds in half. While that does make it twice as thick, it usually doesn't present a problem unless wearing skin-tight jeans. The Razr 5G and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 might solve the pocket problem. However, they are still much wider and longer when unfolded. That means the iPhone 13 mini is still the best small phone on the market.
