Apple's new iOS 14 update for the iPhone came with a variety of changes, with back tap being a major one. Through this update, Apple has made it possible to tap the back of an iPhone in order to take a screenshot, although that is not all the back tap feature is capable of. With the activation of back tap, iPhone owners will be able to customize the feature to fit their lifestyle.

This new setting hopes to improve accessibility on iPhone and represents just one of the many features included in the iOS 14 update that is changing the way the iPhone is used. And yes, when enabled, the back tap feature will work with a phone case on. Proving Apple’s goals toward seamless technology are slowly becoming a reality.

In order to enable back tap, the user needs to first go to settings, then to accessibility, touch, and finally back tap. When enabling the back tap feature, the user is prompted to choose between a triple or double-tap. Each tap option can have different settings depending on preference. Back tap is popularly used for screenshotting, with that having emerged as the most practical use so far. However, the feature can provide a shortcut to so much more than that.

Other Ways To Use Back Tap

The other options pre-loaded within the back tap setting include; App Switcher, Control Center, Home, Lock Screen, Mute, Notification Center, Reachability, Shake, Siri, Spotlight, Volume Down, and Volume Up. You can also use the feature to quickly access accessibility settings including; AssistiveTouch, Classic Invert, Magnifier, Smart Invert, Speak Screen, VoiceOver, and Zoom.

Back tap can even be used for shortcuts such as calling or texting with your most important contacts, providing quicker and easier access to those you communicate with most often. Furthermore, all settings provided through the back tap feature are also available when the iPhone is locked. Simply tap the back of the phone, which will prompt the passcode or Face ID authentication before continuing to execute the saved back tap setting.

If you aren’t sure which setting will work best for you, change the preference until the best use becomes clear. Each iPhone user will have different preferences and settings in order to create their ideal iPhone setup. The back tap addition to the iOS 14 update is meant to improve the iPhone experience, so when choosing a back tap setting, choose something that makes the experience more accessible.
