Drew Barrymore has provided the public with a look at the apology gift she sent Steven Spielberg after her Playboy shoot. The two have enjoyed a father/daughter style relationship ever since Barrymore appeared in Spielberg’s blockbuster E.T. at the age of six. In successive years, their bond has ensured that he’s continued to watch over her.

Though today Barrymore is known primarily by many for her work on Santa Clarita Diet and The Drew Barrymore Show, there was a time when she was one of Hollywood’s most intriguing sex symbols. It was 1995 in particular when Barrymore seemed especially dedicated to living up to this reputation. Not only did she pose nude in Playboy that year, but she also generated plenty of talk when she climbed up onto David Letterman’s desk during an interview, flashed her breasts and kissed him on his cheek. At the time she was just 19 years old and had already starred in 19 feature films. Her career was consistently picking up momentum, but her journey into adulthood wasn’t easy for everyone to take. Shortly after her Playboy shoot, Spielberg responded by sending Barrymore a quilt that said “Cover up,” along with her Playboy issue, in which she was covered up with cut-out paper doll clothes.

Recently during an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore was overwhelmed by a guest appearance from Spielberg to help celebrate her 46th birthday. In addition to assuring Barrymore that he has always and will always care about her, Spielberg also took the time to show off the “apology” gift that Barrymore sent him after appearing in Playboy. The gift, which can be seen in the image below, involves three photos of Barrymore dressed as a nun in front of a church, with the captions “I’m sorry,” “I’ve seen the light,” and “I’m on my way.” Spielberg said:

What she said on the picture was, she said the first one was "I'm sorry," the second one was, "I've seen the light," and the last frame is, "I'm on my way."

Barrymore’s emotional response to seeing Spielberg on her talk show speaks to the bond that the two share. Though her career has been filled with a variety of highlights, there were some very dark days as well, with the actress entering rehab at the age of 13 and attempting suicide at 14. As Barrymore states in the recent segment from her talk show, Spielberg was the first person in her life whom she felt truly cared about her. The fact that the two are still close today further underscores those feelings, as does the fact that Spielberg still has Barrymore’s apology gift hanging in his home.

Though Spielberg has his own children, it does seem that he and Drew Barrymore will always be a part of one another’s lives. That sort of lasting relationship is great to see, but somehow, seeing how important Spielberg is to Barrymore and vice versa is extra special. Not only was Barrymore able to successfully navigate a childhood that was far removed from what is considered typical, but she did so with the help of someone who is clearly responsible for more than some of the greatest films of all time.
