Richard Linklater is receiving critical acclaim for his latest film, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood, but the Texan auteur isn’t slowing down as he currently has numerous films in development. His third rotoscoped movie was released on Netflix in early April. It showcases what the man often does best, pushing the limits in how to tell a narrative story while nostalgically reflecting on his youth.

Linklater rose to prominence after his free-flowing independent film Slacker captured odd characters in Austin, Texas, and led him to his breakthrough project, the classic 1970s coming-of-age high school movie Dazed and Confused. He earned critical acclaim for what’s been dubbed the Before Trilogy, which may or may not see Before Sunrise 4 happen, while more commercial hits like School of Rock have proved to be perennially popular. In 2015, he finally earned a Best Director nomination for his 12-year-long experimental project Boyhood.

Known for his laid-back and casual style, passion for the era in which he grew up, and his willingness to experiment with how a film can be presented or shot, Linklater is one of the most interesting auteurs working today. Always keeping busy with a project, Linklater has multiple films in various stages of production. Here's every Richard Linklater movie in the pipeline.

Untitled John Brinkley Biopic

Linklater is currently developing a biopic about early 20th-century con man John Brinkley, who claimed to be a doctor and scammed his way to fame and fortune using fake medicine and a popular radio broadcast. The controversial figure received hundreds of wrongful death lawsuits that rendered the formerly rich con man penniless. In a strange side story, Brinkley was also one of the first to broadcast radio programming across the Mexican border. There are no details on who will play Brinkley, but the period piece may be one of the biggest budgets of Richard Linklater's typically modest films.

Untitled Bill Hicks Biopic

The life story of American comedian Bill Hicks will be examined and retold in Linklater’s second biographical project in development. Hicks rose to fame in the late 1980s, but his career was cut short when he died from pancreatic cancer in 1994 at the age of 32. Known for his dark sense of humor that tackled region, politics, and even conspiracy theories, Hicks is still fondly remembered by other comics who have been influenced by his style. Little is known about the project and no one is attached to star, though plenty of cinephiles have pointed to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who has played many real-life figures from Philippe Petit to whistleblower Edward Snowden, as the perfect casting choice.

Linklater is returning to the extensive and lengthy shooting style of Boyhood to craft a film taking place over decades by shooting a section of it every year. An adaptation of a Stephen Sondheim musical, the plot of this bold experiment is described as following a talented Broadway composer who abandons his theater career in New York and all his friends in order to produce movies in Los Angeles. It will be roughly set between the years 1957 to 1976. Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt are attached to star and the expected release date will fall around 2040. Upon its completion, Richard Linklater could also earn a Guinness World Record for longest film shoot. Even though Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood isn't quite as ambitious, it's a great film to watch to get a better feel for Linklater's work.
