There’s a new troubling trend gaining popularity in Apex Legends’ ranked matches. According to player reports, gamers are teaming with enemies to lure their random squadmates in death traps. That’s quite an issue capable of turning players away from the game, which is especially worrying on the eve of the approaching new ranked season.

The upcoming Legacy Season, which lands in Apex Legends on May 4, is about to expand the gaming experience beyond the core battle royale set of rules. The immensely popular title will be enriched with a brand new Apex Legends game mode called Arenas, which will introduce tactical 3v3 battles on smaller maps. Basically, it’ll be a team deathmatch with purchasable equipment, but with Legends’ unique abilities and revives. No respawns are allowed in the Arenas, though. As if teaming in battle royale games for an easy win wasn’t an issue on its own, the recent implementation of it in Apex Legends is even more infuriating.

According to a report posted by MohSSEEZZ on Reddit, the player came across two randomly matched teammates in a Diamond-ranked Apex Legends game. These gamers teamed with an enemy squad to constantly lure the poor player in a death trap only to get them killed by opponents and then revived at a respawn beacon. MohSSEEZZ got resurrected three times to repeat the process, after which the player decided that it would be better to just leave rather than further suffer from such toxic behavior. The worst part is that the two deceivers were even acting friendly to trick their victim into trusting them. Apparently, this so-called “ranked kidnapping” is now a thing as other players revealed in the comments that the very same story happened to them, as well.

As much as being used to farm kills is immensely humiliating for any Apex Legends player, losing a ranked game to cheaters is even more depressing. If there’s a hacker in the lobby, other participants have little to no chances to score a win against the scoundrel. Luckily, Respawn has acknowledged the issue and is considering appropriate measures to counter such a discouraging experience. According to developers, there’s an in-discussion solution to offer players an RP compensation for losing a ranked match to cheaters. Although the feature is yet to be implemented, players will definitely welcome the decision with open arms.

Teaming with enemy squads to farm kills on random teammates is an obvious violation of Apex Legends rules, which should not be tolerated under any circumstances. While it’s virtually impossible to detect such behavior automatically, Respawn should thoroughly examine direct player reports and act accordingly. If several abusers get permabanned as the result of their toxic “ranked kidnapping,” many others will learn the lesson and probably drop teaming for good. A precedent is needed, meaning that Respawn should take responsibility and start helping its devoted player base.
