Respawn Entertainment developers said in a Reddit AMA that the team remains hard at work on Apex Legends' update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, though they have nothing concrete to share as of yet. Apex Legends landed on PC and consoles in early 2019, well over a year before Sony and Microsoft rolled out their respective new-gen consoles.

However, the constant flux of last-gen titles receiving updates for the latest platforms leaves players eager to see how slightly older titles can leverage the power of more advanced hardware. DOOM Eternal, for example, recently received a PS5 and Xbox Series port that enabled frame rate options targeting 120fps in a Performance Mode. The same update introduced id Software's impressive work with ray-tracing technology, too. On the multiplayer-focused side of things, Rainbow Six: Siege similarly received a current-gen upgrade that featured modes targeting 4K/60fps, 120fps, and faster load times. While 120fps is a "high priority" for Apex Legends developers, there remains an air of mystery around when exactly such an update on PS5 and Xbox will see the light of day.

Following the recent release of Apex Legends: Emergence, Respawn's Director of Communications, RK Rigney, participated in a developer AMA on Reddit (via GamingBolt). When asked about the title's previously teased PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades, Rigney noted that there's currently nothing new to share on this front. At the very least, though, he confirmed the hotly-anticipated upgrades are still "in the works." Rigney told fans the following: "Oh man, I WISH I had an update to share but we can't say anything definitive at the moment—so can't spoil anything here. Trust us, [though], it's in the works and we're excited about it, too."

Caustic surrounded by yellow smoke in Apex Legends

This is the same AMA in which developers revealed that cross-progression in Apex Legends won't arrive anytime soon. In fact, such an update will likely remain under lock and key until at least 2022. Previously, Game Director Chad Grenier placed blame on the hacks that plague Apex Legends and Titanfall as reason for the delay. It's possible that hackers are similarly holding up the line for new-gen upgrades.

Since its meteoric rise in popularity over two years ago, the battle royale title has received a panoply of content updates, the most recent of which went live on August 3. Titled Emergence, the set of changes in question introduced Seer as a new Legends, unlocked the Rampage LMG, and unleashed a decimated version of the World's Edge map.
