Developer Respawn Entertainment has revealed Apex Legends’ next character, Horizon, in a backstory video that has more than a little in common with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. The announcement comes shortly after a Halloween-themed event started in the game.

With the launch of the Fight or Fright 2020 event, wall-running has been reintroduced back to the Titanfall universe where events of Apex Legends take place. Unfortunately for players, this movement technique, which is the signature ability of Titanfall’s Pilots, is available in Apex Legends strictly within the limited-time mode Shadow Royale. Still, hopes are high that wall-running will someday be added as an ability for a new Legend.

Respawn has officially revealed the upcoming Season 7 character for Apex Legends in a new video belonging to the “Stories from the Outlands” series. Titled “Promise,” the cinematic trailer sets the backstory of astrophysicist Horizon, a new Legend coming to the game. The video focuses on the scientist’s journey to a black hole to collect a substance that is likely to solve the energetic crisis back at her home planet. In a nod to Interstellar, Horizon is forced to leave her own family behind to find a way to save the entire human race. Horizon leaves her kid with a promise that she will return, but in a series of unfortunate events, she loses decades of precious time trying to escape the black hole.

Season 7 comes packed with new content and mechanics. Using mysterious crystals she’s harvested around the black hole, Horizon can manipulate time and space with her gravity-based abilities, which are yet to be fully revealed. Another big addition to Apex Legends is the third map, Olympus, which is an aerial city floating high up in the skies above the planet’s surface. Additionally, vehicles are seemingly preparing for a proper introduction as the Trident, a three-seated speedster, has been briefly teased by Respawn.

This fall is indeed a favorable period for Apex Legends as the game has been recently gotten highly-anticipated cross-play support. There’s a couple of restrictions, though, as cross-play matchmaking pools are only united by default on PS4 and Xbox One. Contrary to that, PC players are kept behind their own separate ecosystem. Still, teams comprising players on all three platforms can play together in a single squad, although they will be thrown into the PC matchmaking pool.

While Horizon’s reveal comes as a surprise, the introduction of a character with gravity-based abilities further emphasizes Respawn’s intention to make Apex Legends’ gameplay as innovative and unpredictable as possible. With supposed gravitational anomalies on top of already existing portals, ziplines, and jump-pads, the game is encouraging verticality and inventive solutions to complicated situations, which is an attractive advantage over other big battle royale titles.
