Coming in January, Matt Kindt (BRZRKR, Dept. H) is delivering a vicious pandemonium of harrowing savagery in Apache Delivery Service from Dark Horse Comics. Billed as a supernatural horror yarn set amidst a treasure hunt for missing Nazi gold during the Vietnam War, Kindt is reuniting with his previous collaborators on Fear Case, artists Tyler and Hilary Jenkins, to bring together this outlandish 4-issue adventure series. Dispatches from the battlefield will likely be bloody.

Kindt has been making quite the name for himself this last year as the co-writer with film star Keanu Reeves behind Boom! Studio’s blockbuster action comic BRZRKR which, along with Kindt’s Dept. H, has recently been picked up by Netflix for further adaptation. Not one to rest on his laurels, Kindt’s newest series from Dark Horse Comics will be among his most ambitious yet, knitting together a tale of terrifying war, international intrigue and supernatural suspense as two ill-placed treasure hunters stumble their way upon a trail of mutilated corpses while on a quest through the napalmed jungles of Vietnam.

Dark Horse describes Apache Delivery Service as a “horrific masterpiece” with shades of psychological and slasher horror thrown in to a disjointedly haunting travelogue to the heart of darkness a la Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 film Apocalypse Now. “Easily the most unsettling story I’ve written and for-sure the creepiest art I’ve seen Tyler and Hilary come up with,” said Kindt. Tyler Jenkins likened the story to “a rather grim ride into hell,” adding, “I have been wanting to make a book set during and in the Vietnam War for a really long time; it is such an interesting period. This book has been a joy to work on.” Check out his exclusive cover art below.

The Vietnam War is a rare setting in contemporary comics, and media at large in this day and age, not the least because it was a tragic and bloody war that resulted in significant social upheaval and left traumatic wounds upon American culture that linger to this day. While surely a fitting setting for what Dark Horse is calling a “bizarre and horrifying” tale, there is a certain novelty to the choice which has untested potential in storytelling. The publisher’s description reads: “Can these men trust each other? Is there a serial killer on the loose? And is there truth to the rumors – that a clan of ancient witches is guarding the missing Nazi gold?” And to be fair, this is a somewhat compelling solicitation, given that it is like nothing else that has ever printed.

What terrors await in a war-torn land filled with guerilla fighters, mysterious caverns and vile sorceresses? Apache Delivery Service #1 goes on sale January 5, wherever comic books are sold.
