The first trailer for Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania features an iconic Elton John song that confirms the plot - and perhaps even hints at Kang the Conqueror's motives in the film. Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania is one of the most important films in the MCU's Multiverse Saga. It will introduce viewers to Jonathan Majors as the main version of Kang the Conqueror, a villain who will ultimately confront Earth's mightiest heroes in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Marvel's first trailer for Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania features the classic ballad "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John. First released in 1973, the song swiftly entered the top ten in both the U.K. and the U.S. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked it among the top 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time, and it's generally considered one of Elton John's best. The MCU has long tried to use classic songs and ballads, particularly in its trailers, and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" fits perfectly with Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania on a thematic level.

The Meaning Behind Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"

Written by Elton John's frequent collaborator Bernie Taupin, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" riffs on Dorothy's experiences in The Wizard of Oz, using them as a metaphor for a person who has been damaged by their own success. Taupin remembered it as part of a phase where he increasingly felt he had to get back to his roots. "I don’t believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn’t want it," he recalled in an interview with American Songwriter. "I just don’t believe I was ever that naive. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting." Taupin considered the yellow brick road a symbol of treachery and deceit, just as in The Wizard of Oz, it led Dorothy to a man who pretended at power but was in reality just as trapped in Oz as she was.

Why "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" Fits Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania

Jonathan Majors as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" fits perfectly with the trailer for Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, summing up so many aspects of the story. Scott Lang is clearly enjoying the fame that has come from being a hero, which answers a key Endgame mystery, but like Taupin, it is likely his relationships are suffering for it. He needs to find a happy medium, a way to balance being a celebrated superhero with being a father for Cassia and (presumably) a lover for Hope Van Dyne. By this interpretation, Scott Lang's experiences in Ant-Man 3 will force him to identify the real priorities in his life, so he can return to Earth as a much more balanced individual.

The song works on another level, though, in that the entire plot evokes memories of The Wizard of Oz. The trailer reveals that, like Dorothy, Ant-Man and his friends will become stranded in the Quantum Realm. This mysterious plane of existence has been reimagined, with Marvel blending the MCU concept with the comic book idea of the Microverse; it is now a strange land inhabited by countless different creatures and species, and Ant-Man and his friends and family must navigate it if they are to escape. Kang the Conqueror is the image of the Great and Powerful Oz, offering Ant-Man a way back home - but he will likely want a favor in return. It is even possible that, like Oz, this variant of Kang the Conqueror has been trapped in the Quantum Realm; Ant-Man's escape attempt could help Kang free himself, meaning Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania could well serve as the launchpad for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
