Anthony Mackie wants to sport Falcon's red-and-white costume from the comics in Avengers 4. The upcoming final installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first saga comes from directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who are currently in the middle of post-production on this summer's Avengers: Infinity War, which has been voted by audiences as 2018's most anticipated superhero movie - and with good reason. Avengers 3 unites Earth's mightiest heroes with the Guardians of the Galaxy for an ultimate showdown with Thanos and his Black Order.
Mackie is slated to reprise his role as Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. The actor first appeared as the superhero in the Russos' Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, and then he reprised his role as Falcon in Peyton Reed's Ant-Man in 2015 and Captain America: Civil War in 2016. While Falcon and all the other heroes who aided Steve Rogers in protecting the Winter Soldier and opposing the Sokovia Accords were arrested (and subsequently rescued), many of them have still managed to get new costumes in the time since their captivity, so why not Falcon?
Speaking to attendees at ACE Comic-Con this past weekend, Anthony Mackie expressed his desire to don Falcon's signature red-and-white costume on the big screen in Avengers 4 (or perhaps another MCU movie down the line?). He said: "I’m pushing for it, I’m pushing for it, I’ve been pushing for spandex for eight years, they won’t give it to me." Considering that the Avengers: Infinity War magazine covers show Falcon sporting a darker-colored suit, it doesn't look like Mackie will be getting his spandex costume just yet.
As for where the heroes find themselves in a post-Civil War world, Mackie said they're all trying to find solid ground upon which to settle and move forward. Of course, audiences know that they won't be able to settle down for long seeing as Thanos is going to come knocking quite soon.
"Coming off such a huge battle that these characters are coming off of, everybody’s trying to find their footing again. Everybody’s trying to figure out where they are and how they’ll be accepted and looked upon, not only by the rest of the world but by the other heroes since we’ve been separated. So that’s kind the overall idea of where we’re coming from and how do we get out of that to save the world."
In the end, Mackie may not get his red-and-white costume, but at least he will be fighting alongside the MCU's mightiest heroes once again - and in a war to save not only the planet, but the galaxy and the universe as well. Who knows, Marvel Studios could add a little blue in Falcon's costume and, ultimately, have him don the Captain America suit. After all, Steve Rogers isn't the only character who fought alongside the Avengers as Cap.
