Ant-Man revealed Janet van Dyne had been trapped in the Quantum Realm for years, and she was finally rescued in Ant-Man & The Wasp – but how did she survive there for so long? After establishing its main superhero team with the Avengers and introducing many villains on Earth, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began exploring its cosmic side. Ant-Man did its part by introducing the Quantum Realm, a dimension in the multiverse that can only be accessed through very specific (and complex) methods.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man follows master thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who takes part in the experiments of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) involving a super-suit that gives the wearer the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength. Pym revealed that his wife, Janet van Dyne, disappeared into the Quantum Realm after going subatomic during a mission to disable a Soviet nuclear missile. Pym was finally able to rescue her in Ant-Man & The Wasp, and while she displayed some interesting abilities gained during her time in the Quantum Realm, it wasn’t explained how she survived there for so long.

The Quantum Realm can be accessed through magical energy, mystical transportation through a Sling Ring (as Doctor Strange can do), or by subatomic shrinking, which is how Janet got trapped there in the first place. Little is known about the Quantum Realm in the MCU, but one of its most important characteristics is that space and time seem irrelevant, as seen with Lang when he was left there for five years following Thanos’ snap, and it could also be used to time-travel, as seen in Avengers: Endgame. Janet spent decades in the Quantum Realm, and aside from some superpowers (such as quantum particle manipulation, healing, and entanglement), she was unharmed when she came back, which has made fans question how she managed to survive there, and they believe the answer could be in the comics.

In the source material, the Quantum Realm is known as the Microverse, and it’s formed by many different dimensions. The Microverse is the home of the Micronauts, a superhero team, and Wasp was also trapped there during Secret Invasion. Marvel Studios can’t use the name “Microverse” due to the rights belonging to Paramount, but they can use the concept of it. Taking all that into account, Janet could have found a civilization within the Quantum Realm, which provided her of sustenance, somewhere to live, and anything else she might have needed (though some argue that due to her shrinking to a subatomic level, she wouldn’t have needed food or anything to survive). This would also explain why she was also mentally unharmed and showed no signs of instability or insanity, as she wasn’t alone and was taught how to live in the Quantum Realm.

Of course, Marvel left this intentionally unanswered as there’s a lot to explore and learn about the Quantum Realm within the MCU, and it will surely be an important topic to address in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ant-Man 3, but given that Janet showed no signs of damage upon her return, it could be safe to assume (for now, at least) that she received helped while in the Quantum Realm, though exactly from who will remain a mystery.
